The Bucko Mate describes the author's seafaring experiences over two decades sailing as an officer in the American merchant marine. This nonfiction, nautical adventure is full of the profane, the dangerous, the drunken, the crazy, the humorous, the romantic and the brave shipmates the author knew. The degeneration of the maritime industry in the United States is paralleled with the disintegration of the abilities and mental stability of a man who had to finally realize that he was burned out at the age of forty. To be a mate on a merchant ship in the modern heyday of the freighters was to be a man in the middle -- in the middle of maritime chaos, living a colorful life that few have ever experienced. From the storms, fog, waterfront bars and union halls, to the near collisions, deaths at sea, fistfights, dangerous cargo and foreign lands, it was a harsh but exciting life. Yet changes in the industry have taken away much of the color and adventure of it. Ships got bigger and crews got smaller. With vast improvements in cargo handling, they don't stay in port long. This effort is my way of getting some of that colorful era written down before it all fades away.

Excerpt from The Yarn of a Bucko Mate: His Adventures in Two Oceans My father, a sturdy pillar of the Baptist church, noticed that I spent a great deal of my time in the barn, and, animated by a curiosity which I should have deprecated had I known of its existence, he followed me to my sanctum. I 'was absorbed in committing to memory a stirring speech of Black beard's to his crew, before attacking a F rench cruiser of twice their own size, when, on throwing back my head in an ecstasy of martial pride to repeat the words aloud, I looked squarely into the watery blue eyes of my father. In 1934, the Pacific Coast was shaken by a massive strike of waterfront workers- on the docks and the ships. In this mighty struggle, the Sailor’s Union of the Pacific, quiescent since it’s defeat in the period after the first World War was reborn. Fighting on San Francisco’s Embarcadero led to the stationing of National Guard troops on the ‘front’. This book looks at the Union from 1885 to 1985.

In 1895 Joshua Slocum set sail from Gloucester, Massachusetts, in the Spray, a thirty-seven-foot sloop. More than three years later, he became the first man to circumnavigate the globe solo, and his account of that voyage, Sailing Alone Around the World, made him internationally famous. But scandal soon followed, and a decade later, with his finances failing, he set off alone once more—never to be seen again. In this definitive portrait of an icon of adventure, Geoffrey Wolff describes, with authority and admiration, a life that would see hurricanes, shipwrecks, pirate attacks, cholera, smallpox, and no shortage of personal tragedy.
