No, I never, never shall be happy again cried Lucy, as weeping bitterly over her poor grandmother's Bible she wrapped it up carefully, and deposited it in a drawer which she was permitted to consider as her own. If for a little while I seem to be getting more cheerful, something comes over me which makes me feel as if I were doing wrong; and I am ashamed of myself for forgetting her a moment But He, who made the human heart, has so mercifully and wisely formed it, that grief cannot retain possession of it for ever: its strength is worn out by its intensity: its acuteness is too violent to be lasting; till, gradually losing its hold, it imperceptibly dies away. In the youthful mind, in particular, it is seldom of long continuance; and it is a gracious provision of God that it should be so. Activity, energy, the well-strung nerve, and strength to bear the burden and heat of the coming day, are the requisite capacities for the proper fulfilment of the task appointed those who are beginning their course, that they may run the race that is set before them successfully; and perfect Goodness, and perfect Wisdom, refuses to lay even the shadow of an unnecessary weight upon them. Lucy gradually, yet rapidly, became both cheerful and happy; and that, too, without losing a particle of just regret for her who had been both a friend and a parent to her. Remembrance of the virtuous deceased is an active and a blessed principle in a good mind. It was a guide to Lucy, a support, joy. It checked in her what was improper, it excited her to what was praiseworthy; and often when, at the close of the day, she laid her head upon her pillow, the sweet reflection would pass over her mind, that Granny would have been pleased with her: the tear that followed that reflectio...

Originally published in 1981. Many of the classics of children’s literature were produced in the Victorian period. But Alice in Wonderland and The King of the Golden River were not the books offered to the majority of children of the time. When writing for children began to be taken seriously, it was not as an art, but as an instrument of moral suasion, practical instruction, Christian propaganda or social control. This book describes and evaluates this body of literature. It places the books in the economic and social contexts of their writing and publication, and considers many of the most prolific writers in detail. It deals with the stories intended to teach the newly-literate poor their social and religious lessons: sensational romances, tales of adventure and military glory, through which the boys were taught the value of self-help and inspired with the ideals of empire; and domestic novels, intended to offer girls a model for the expression of heroism and aspiration within the restricted Victorian woman’s world.
