Excerpt from The Books of Chronicles Of the nine books included in the Kethubim or Hagiographa, the following are regarded as historical: Esther, Daniel, Chronicles, and Ezra and Nehemiah. The second of these is partly historical and partly prophetical, and belongs to the period of the captivity. The first is a monograph, standing by itself, and referring to a singular instance of the protection vouchsafed by Divine Providence to the Jews of the dispersion under the Persian Empire. The other three form really and designedly a continuous history from the beginning of time, and more fully from the accession of David to the administration of Nehemiah. The books of Chronicles are the only proper antecedent to the history of the times after the captivity. The Occasion. - The books of Ezra and Nehemiah contain a narrative of events occurring after the return of the Jews from the exile of seventy years; the former having for its central event the rebuilding of the temple, the latter the restoration of the walls of Jerusalem. The grand difference in the condition of this people after the captivity was this, that the civil and religious affairs of the nation were no longer governed by a common principle, or as we should say, that the state and the church were no longer the counterparts of one common polity. The ministers of religion still continued to acknowledge the supremacy of God and profess obedience to His law. But the rulers of the state had become subject to the paramount authority of a foreign and heathen power. It is true that a descendant of David was for some years the civil head of the community. But this was a short-lived and evanescent shadow of the kingdom that was to have no end. Zerubbabel, son of Shealtiel, was the leader of the returning colony. But we read of no descendant of his holding sway over Judah. It is true that the posterity of Judah continued to be a nation having a civil polity in certain respects peculiar to itself. But in other respects it was modified and controlled by the arbitrary will of an external power. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Books of Chronicles: With Maps, Notes and Introduction The present General Editor for the Old Testament in the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges desires to say that, in accordance with the policy of his predecessor the Bishop of Worcester, he does not hold himself responsible for the particular interpretations adopted or for the opinions expressed by the editors of the several Books, nor has he endeavoured to bring them into agreement with one another. It is inevitable that there should be differences of opinion in regard to many questions of criticism and interpretation, and it seems best that these differences should find free expression in different volumes. He has endeavoured to secure, as far as possible, that the general scope and character of the series should be observed, and that views which have a reasonable claim to consideration should not be ignored, but he has felt it best that the final responsibility should, in general, rest with the individual contributors. Excerpt from Chronicles of the Armstrongs In compiling this work the writer has had the advan tage of not only visiting the most prominent localities mentioned, but of having lived in them. The main chain of facts in the history is based upon chronicles and records of acknowledged validity, while other sources of information have been fitly used to supple ment and illustrate the narrative. I have endeavored to give the sources of information in almost every instance. It would have been impracticable and unnecessary to have given every record found pertaining to the Arm strongs; those presented are the most important ones, and sufficient to act as landmarks to the descent of this remarkable race. Of this I feel certain, that the early part of every Armstrong's lineage, if he comes rightly by the name, is in this book. The old spelling, occur ring occasionally, was used mostly to preserve the etymology and significance of names which in modern orthography would have become obscure; moreover. Excerpt from The Books of the Chronicles: Theologically and Homiletically Expounded I'm: last book of the Old Testament canon forms a comprehensive history, which recapitulates the progress of the people of God from Paradise to the close of the Babylonish captivity in a peculiar point of view, partly extracting, partly repeating, and partly supplementing the contents of the earlier canonical books of history, with the exception of the books of Ezra Nehemiah, and Esther, which are later in point of contents than our book. Excerpt from The Chronicles: Edited, With an Introduction and Notes The greatest interest in the present volume will perhaps be in that part which goes over the ground already trav ersed by the history of Tne Kings. There can be few better exercises in the study of historic literature than to compare these two divisions of Bible history, alike in their treatment Of the same incident, and again in the general historic perspective which may be traced through lengthy portions of narrative. An incident that is necessarily prominent in both works is David's bringing of the Ark to Jerusalem, the ceremony by which was inaugurated the metropolis of Jehovah's monarchy. I proceed to indicate in parallel columns the two treatments of a common theme. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
