The essays within these covers inform and challenge. T. Hoogsteen recognized that even with the world-changing alterations caused by migrations, disasters, and wars profoundly reshaping the face of the earth and its human community, the Lord Jesus Christ creates history. Nothing on earth or in the universe happens from fatalistic forces. In the Bible, imagebearing and officebearing come through with imposing insistence; we cannot assume that we can be who we want to be, independent individuals or communist societies. The Lord gives each person a place and a task for our lives. Self-examination, a forgotten responsibility, comes to the fore with compelling insight. Who are you in the presence of the Christ? An ignored exercise of prolegomena--the explanatory word before starting theological work--is recognized as significant for this introductory effort. The author discovered ancient Greek mythology holding up the formidable Nicene Creed, Homoean Christology, and the Athanasian, matters that need deletion and reformation. The ideal of the freedom of the will has long, at least since the third century AD, intrigued the church and the world outside. Freedom of the will is a pagan invention. Christ Jesus in the name of the Father and through the Spirit gives perspective even in darkest times.

For centuries, the Westminster Shorter Catechism has helped Christians young and old to know their “chief end.” Now, authors William Boekestein, Jonathan Landry Cruse, and Andrew J. Miller value this venerable catechism and winsomely introduce a new generation to its powerful message. Dividing the catechism into 52 brief devotions, they explain and apply each question and answer in a year’s worth of Lord’s Days. This valuable new resource is great for individual and family use for all who desire to “glorify and enjoy God forever.”

This is a study on Reformed theological debates during the »Long Eighteenth Century« in Britain and New England. By »Long« a period that goes beyond 1700–1799 is in view. This examination begins just before the eighteenth century by looking at the Neonomian-Antinomian debate in the 1690s. This is followed by the Marrow Controversy in Scotland in the eighteenth century. After that, the authors address the ecclesiological debates between George Whitefield and the Erskines. The doctrine of free choice concerning Edwards and his departure from classical Reformed orthodoxy is highlighted next, followed by reflections on the Edwardseans and the atonement. Returning to Britain again, the volume provides a study on hyper-Calvinism, and on eschatological differences among key figures in the eighteenth century. More specific debates in particular Baptist circles are noted, including the battle over Sandemandianism and the Trinitarian battles fought by Andrew Fuller and others. Returning to ecclesiology, a discussion on the subscription controversy in Philadelphia in the early eighteenth century and an analysis of the debate about the nature of »revival« in New England close this volume.

"In this work, traditionally translated as On Christian Doctrine, Augustine combines the pedagogical methods he learned from Greek and Roman writings with the content of the Christian faith to help preachers present biblical teachings in an effective manner. This new translation is lively and accessible." Library Journal
