Excerpt from The Black Diamond, 1930, Vol. 1 Why have some girls stayed in Wright Hall for four years? The reason isn't foolish and it isn't because we had to, but because Wright Hall 'is what it is. We have plenty of pure, nourishing food, prepared in'the right way and served at the right time. Wright Hall is one of Pikeville High School's greatest educational depart ments; for here we have practice in good housekeeping and practice in using modern, time -saving machinery for the housewife, which so many need just after they get out of high school. We work an hour a day, which not only pays our room rent, but also gives us our necessary exercise and keeps us from getting so lazy that we think the world owes us a living instead of our owing something to the world. We have quiet rooms, with definite periods in which to study, and a teacher who visits us during study hour, offers aid, and sees that we do not squander our time. Excerpt from The Black and Gold, Vol. 1: April, 1911 After going something like two miles, the old man called a halt, telling us that we must now separate and arrange our selves at intervals along the track which the deer usually travelled. We stationed ourselves about two hundred yards from each other and breathlessly awaited the coming of the deer. The old hunter with his dogs went deep into the woods. Not a sound was to be heard except the occasional barking of the dogs. All at once the old hunter began yelling, and the dogs began barking at a fearful rate. Every man cocked his gun and waited in silence, scarcely breathing for fear of making a noise. Minutes seemed like hours, and we had begun to think that the deer had gone another way, when suddenly we heard something coming through the brush at breakneck speed. Peering through the undergrowth I saw a large buck coming toward my friend, Henry Smith. He came within twenty yards of Henry and then stood stone still for at least half a minute. 'henry stood there with his gun cocked, trembling as though he had a chill, until the deer turned and galloped off through the woods. When we saw that the deer was gone all of us cried: You stupid thing! Henry, why didn't you shott that deer? And Henry meekly replied: Why, really, fellows, when I saw that deer I was so frightened that I forgot to shoot. This critical reexamination of Amos 'n' Andy, the pioneering creation of Charles Correll and Freeman Gosden, presents an unapologetic but balanced view lacking in most treatments. It relies upon an untapped resource--thousands of pages of scripts from the show's nearly forgotten earliest version, which most clearly reflected the vision of its creators. Consequently, it provides fresh insights and in part refutes the usual blanket condemnations of this groundbreaking show. The text incorporates numerous script excerpts, provides key background information, and also acknowledges the show's importance to radio broadcasting and modern entertainment.

As radio developed in the early 1920s, the focus for most people was the AM band and stations such as KDKA, the first broadcast station. There was, however, another broadcast method that was popular among many early enthusiasts--shortwave radio. As is true today, the transmission of news and entertainment programs over shortwave frequencies permitted reception over great distances. For many in America and beyond, shortwave was an exciting aspect of the new medium. Some still tune the shortwave bands to enjoy the programming. Others pursue broadcasts for the thrill of the hunt. This book fully covers shortwave broadcasting from its beginning through World War II. A technical history examining the medium's development and use tells the story of a listener community that spanned the globe. Included are overviews of the primary shortwave stations operating worldwide in the 1930s, along with clubs and competitions, publications and prizes. A rich collection of illustrations includes many QSLs, the cards that stations sent to acknowledge receipt of their transmissions and that are much prized by long-distance collectors.
