Excerpt from The Birmingham Medical Review, Vol. 15: A Monthly Journal of the Medical Sciences; March, 1884 AN interesting case of Rheumatic Fever came under my observation a short time ago, which was complicated with grave nervous symptoms and hyper-pyrexia. The following report of it is extracted from the notes made by my clinical clerk, Mr. Eliot. T. H. Act. 17, of no occupation, was admitted into the Queen's Hospital under my care on November lgth, 1883. Up to four years ago he was quite well. At that time he was attacked with acute rheumatism, which laid him up for seven weeks. Four months ago he had a second attack which lasted five weeks. After this he remained well till five days before admission, when a third attack supervened. His father and mother are dead from causes unknown he has no brothers or sisters. He goes on, however, to say an analysis of a thousand cases at the Massachusetts General Hospital shewed that the average mortality was only 10 per cent. When the fatal cases occurring in persons over fifty years of age were excluded, and excluding also those fatal cases in which the patients were delicate, intemperate, or suffering from some complication.
