In Ireland, a reliable source of king scallop (Pecten maximus) spat and successful ongrowing techniques needs to be found in order to have a stable scallop aquaculture industry. Also the stress effects of various husbandry practices such as transport on the physiology of the scallop is virtually unknown but believed to be significant. Bantry Bay was chosen as a potential area for spat collection using artificial collectors and ongrowing trials. The spat collection study showed a variable amount of spat was found between sites and between years. The most effective collector had the largest surface area. The results from the ongrowing trial stressed the importance of reducing stocking densities and increasing mesh sizes for ongrowing to increase growth of scallops in intermediate culture. Growth differences were also shown between two populations of scallops grown at a common site. Two stress gradients were applied in this study, a short acute emersion stress and a long term density stress. These stress gradients were used to assess the usefulness of various techniques for quality assessment. The most promising results arose from the recessing and righting trials since this non destructive test successfully discriminated the different qualities of scallops arising from both long and short term stress. Three transport trials were carried out, dry transport in polystyrene boxes containing seaweed and transport by vivier truck at various densities. The results showed that as the transport time increased the Adenylic Energetic Charge (AEC) levels decreased in both the smooth and striated muscle but did not reach a critical level. In general, the results indicate that greater survival can be achieved over long distances (greater than twelve hours) and at higher densities by vivier truck.
