Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator, or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations, Expository, Scientific, Geographical, Historical and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible: St. Matthew Tun Nam - new Tasmanian - The term, New Testament, is unquestionably connected with the institution of the Lord's Supper. The Lord Himself designates the Eucharist the New Covenant in His blood, and this name is strictly correct. The New Testament fellowship of believers reconciled to God by Christ, which, so to speak, commences in, and is introduced by baptism, is completed and appears outwardly in the Holy Supper. In the Eucharist the Lord carries out that New Covenant with the Church which is founded upon His holy life and His Word, upon His atoning death, His victory, and on the conversion of individual believers. While the celebration of the Eucharist is a remembrance of the first foundation of the Church, it ever inaugurates anew the formation of the Church, and also serves for its manifestation. Hence the writings which record the foundation'of this new. And eternal Covenant are themselves called the New Covenant, the New Testament. Lastly, this designation indicates the connection and the contrast between these writings and those of the Old Covenant. (j. P. Lange, D.D.) Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator, or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations: Expository, Scientific, Geographical, Historical, and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible; Galatians Tiara Bmerous Tsunaucms. - The Phrygian religion, adopted by the Gauls, was a demonstrative nature-worship, both sensuous and startling. The coitus was orgiastic, with wild music and dances led by the Corybantes - not without the usual accommniments of impurities and other abominations, though it might have mystic initiations and secret teachings. Rhea, or Cybele, the mother of the gods, was the chief object of adoration, and derived a surname from the places where her service was established. The great Mother appears on the coins of all the cities, and many coins found in the mine of the Wall of Hadrian have her efiigy. At Paesinae her image was supposed to have fallen from heaven, and there she was called Agdistes. Though the statue was taken to Rome during the war with Hannibal, the city retained a sacred pro-eminence. Strabo says that her priests were a sort of sovereigns endowed with large revenues, and that the Attalian kings built for her a magnificent temple. The Gauls are supposed to have been accustomed to somewhat similar religious ordinances in their national ao-called Druidin. Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator, or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations, Vol. 6: Expository, Scientific, Geographical, Historical, and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible; Joshua, Judges, Ruth Tee object or m Boom - The object of the book is to magnify the inviolable covenant faithfulness of Jehovah in the fulfilment of His promises (xxi. 43 by the historical information as to the conquest by the covenant people of the land of Canaan promised to their fathers, and their inheritance of it (i. 2 through the Almighty assistance of Jehovah, under the guidance of Joshua, Moses' minister, who had been called to effect the accomplishment of the Divine promise, according to an appointment recorded in the law itself (deut. Xxxi. Prof. C'. F. Keil.) The Book of Joshua is one of the most important writings in t 9 Old Covenant, and should never be separated from the Pentateuch, of which it is at once both the continuation and completion. Between this book and the five books of Moses there is the same analogy as between the four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. The four Gospels give an account of the transactions of Jesus Christ, the Christian legislature, just as the first five books of the Bible give, for the most part, of the doings of Moses, the Jewish legislator; and the Acts of the Apostles, as a book, bears the same relation to these Gospels as the Book of Joshua to the Pentateuch. **This ebook version of The Biblical Illustrator - Pastoral Commentary on Romans contains nearly 3800 pages of commentary! What if Charles Spurgeon helped you prepare next Sunday’s sermon? Or what if you could talk over your preaching with Joseph Parker, Richard Baxter, Henry Ward Beecher and H. P. Liddon. Do you think it would make a difference to get the input of some of the greatest preachers who ever lived? That’s precisely what Joseph Exell had in mind when he put together the massive series of volumes called The Biblical Illustrator. In what can only be called a Herculean feat, he spent years gathering preaching notes and sermon outlines from the very best preachers of his day (in the late 1800s and early 1900s), and he did it covering every book of the Bible. And it is amazingly comprehensive. Exell approached his task by taking every verse in the Bible and seeking to discover how it has been preached in the past. Though there is plenty of exegetical material here, this is not primarily a commentary. This series is for preachers, teachers, Bible students and anyone else looking for penetrating pastoral insights from some of the all-time greats of the faith.
