Excerpt from The Bible, Its Own Refutation While writing this book, I imagined some Christian at my side whom I addressed in the second person whenever it suited my convenience. For the purpose of avoiding tedious explanations or the use of words imlying condition, I have, in many instances, treated of facts as being established, intending to be understood as merely asserting that they were alleged by the writers, whose books were under review. For the same reason I have called certain books of the Bible after the names of their reputed authors, notwithstanding my previous denial of their genuineness. My anxiety, that the Chapter on the Prophecies should be understood, induces me to request the reader, on his first perusal, to examine those verses only, of the chapters which have been quoted entire, to which his attention is particularly invited. Had I quoted but these verses, I should have been accused of garbling. It is well known with what reluctance we lay down one book to take up another, to which reference is made. Not one in a hundred of our citizens has ever read those books that are called prophetical, with a view of understanding them. I am more than anxious that they should be read, and their true character understood. Influenced by these considerations, I have made copious extracts from some of them. Let me also request the reader to become familiar with the characters and histories of those individuals whose names are found in this chapter, for he never will be able to understand and appreciate the argument, unless the character and history of each be intimately associated with the name. I ask nothing of the reader which I have not given him the means of acquiring. The propriety of this request was evinced to me a few days since. J, Woolsey; And in the Third Annual Report of the Am; And For; Bible Society Acts xi. 13, we inust read, And showed us how he had seen a messenger in his house Acts xii. 15, Then said they, it is his (peter's) messenger Matt. Iv. 11, Then the devil leaveth him, and behold messengers came and ministered to him. Matt. Xviii. 10, Their messengers do always behold the face Of my Father in heaven: 1 Cor. Vi. 3, Know ye not, that we shall judge messengers. 7 Heb. I. 4, Being made so much better than the messengers. Heb ii. 16, He took not on him the nature Of messengers and Heb. Xiii. For some have entertained messengers unawares. Such effulgent light does the Baptist Glossary shed over the pages Of the sacred word. Who will not henceforth trust that glossary for the meaning of the word baptize? The word Church, in like manner, our Baptist brethren have, by their glossary, interdicted from the New Testa ment, and directed us to read in its stead Assembly. Excerpt from A Refutation of the Doctrine of Uninterrupted Apostolic Succession: With a Correction of Errors Concerning Rev. John Wesley and Dr. Coke; In Answer to the Rev. G. T. Chapman, and Others As such were the views and sentiments, of our author in relation to other Churches, we cannot wonder that he more than intimates, that, in his estimation, they - and especially their ministers - are in danger of the severe, yet, as he supposes, just judgment of God; as was manifested in the case of Korah, Dathan and Abiram; or of Uzzah, who with unsanctified hands ventured to touch, with the design of supporting, the tottering Ark of God l. Excerpt from The Sinlessness of Jesus: An Evidence for Christianity In preparing this new edition, it was impossible to omit noticing, either to refute or to agree with them, the various theories advanced by the theological movements which have meanwhile taken place. And how varied and eventful has been our experience in this respect since 1828! At the same time, it was also necessary to pay due attention to, and to profit by, whatever might have been said on our subject by theological contemporaries. Thus matter has gradually accumulated, till what was at first but an article of. Moderate compass, has become a complete and sizeable volume. Excerpt from A Refutation of the Doctrine of Total Hereditary Depravity What, but ignorance of human nature, has led to the admission, by many religionists, of the doctrine of total hereditary depravity? A doctrine, which, in order to its refutation, needs but one enlightened glance of the mind's eye, at the principles of which man is composed. This doctrine, although incompatible with every prin ciple of self-knowledge, has become extensively papa-c lat - is in fact a precious ingredient in many popular creeds - is the chief corner stone of Calvinistic and Ar minian sectarism. Men with ditliculty look within themselves; and being repeatedly told that their deprav ity is total and hereditary, take the truth of it for grant ed, on the mere ipse dizit of those who teach it, with out that examination, which is necessary to a detection d' it: fallacies.
