Excerpt from The Bible Doctrine of Prayer Too much there is of attempt in many public prayers, so called, to cover the whole range of the elements of prayer without regard to time, place, or present need. Too little of real praying and too much of making a prayer by elaborate phrase mongering. (wm. M. Taylor in Parables of Our Lord.) Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Prayer This is the first of a short series of books on the Great Christian Doctrines. There is, I believe, a widespread and earnest desire on the part of teachers of the Bible to do more than has lately been done for the teaching of Christian doctrine. The complaint that doctrine is dry is due to the way it is taught, even more than to the spirit of the age Anything is dry that is disorderly or unreal. In this volume the Doctrine of Prayer is presented in an orderly sequence, and contact with reality is maintained at every step by means of illustration or example. Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Prayer: An Essay There are two kinds of Prayer, the Prayer of Faith and the Prayer of Form. Men must either pray in earnest, because they expect their prayer to accomplish something, and ask God for what they want just as they would ask any one else, - expecting to get it; and this kind of prayer I call the Prayer of Faith. Or they must pray as a matter of propriety, and from a sense of duty, - because prayer is beautiful, or because prayer is commanded; and this kind of prayer I call the Prayer of Form. Now when people get to praying as a form, - a proper, beautiful, excellent form though it be, - they will soon leave off praying at all. A certain insincerity is felt in such a work. We cannot go on with it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Doctrine of Prayer: Its Utility, and Its Relation to Providence Prayer is not a weak part of the gospel system. It can not only, by inherent force, hold its own position against all assaults, but it can furnish efficient support to other parts of the system of divine truth. The writer hopes that the following essay, which he modestly offers to the public, will tend to sustain this proposition. G Campbell Morgan wrote the Practice of Prayer not just to recommend prayer, but a full biblical underpinning to a habit of prayer and an acknowledgement of the Christian doctrine of the omniscient and omnipotent God. In his life-long distinguished career of biblical study Morgan was particularly struck by the passage where the disciples beseech Jesus, 'Lord, teach us to pray'. Reverend Morgan was both insistent that the modern church consider the necessity of wholehearted, faithful prayer and the most appropriate way to achieve it. He believed that the answers were furnished to the faithful by God but that the development of faith, the knowledge of how to pray and even more importantly the appropriate attitude for worship were crucial to righteous worship. In this work he explains his concept of the correct method. Morgan examines each element of the trinity thoughtfully and explains in clear and poetic language the role that each element of the trinity plays in enabling the ideal practice of prayer. He identifies a tantalising human emotionality in Christ, the capacity for mercy in God and the inspiration for prayer that he attributes to the Holy Spirit. He refuses bars to prayer and urges those who would receive the full benefit of prayer to eschew activities that would block them from periods of theological reflection in favour of a more reflective approach to faith. As as prominent teacher, theologian and minister Reverend Morgan's arguments about the ideal approach to the practice and theory of prayer reflect his experience and education, as well as an emotional and moving account of spiritual closeness to God that he felt through prayer. For those seeking to expand the meditative element of their worship this book will linger on in the mind. Excerpt from The Bible Prayer-Book Word of God is, in petitions adapted to all the various circum stances of human life. Prayer is one of the richest channels of appointed blessings to man; and long as they live, should Christians cherish the spirit of prayer. Every attempt to facilitate the faithful and profitable discharge of this duty, therefore deserves encouragement. And though fully persuaded of the inutility Of the constant and exclusive use of forms of prayer, especially in public worship; i have no doubt, that the perusal of prayers in private, and their occasional use in social worship, especially in the devotion of the family, may be attended by a happy influence. Without supposing that your selections may not in Some instances admit of improvement, I regard them excellent as a whole, and cordially commend the work' to the favour of the friends of Zion. Trusting that the great Head of the church, will crown with abundant blessings these Prayers, which his own Spirit indited. Excerpt from Church Doctrine, Bible TruthThe Prayer-book has too often been assumed to need apology, on account of what it teaches respecting the effects of the Sacraments and the f unctions of the ministry, whereas if it did not contain the doctrine in question it would be indefensible, because it would not, so far, embody the teaching of Scripture.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
