Excerpt from The Axioms of Religion: A New Interpretation of the Baptist Faith The motives which led to the preparation of this volume are set forth in the first chapter. For a number of years the author has felt that a fresh statement of the Baptist position was possible which would enable the world to understand us better. A series of addresses, including one before the American Baptist Publication Society in St. Louis, Mo., in 1905, another the same year at The Baptist World Congress in London, England, two addresses in Richmond, Va., in 1906, before Richmond College and The Baptist General Association, and another at the Baptist Convention of North America, at Jamestown, in 1907, set forth in one form or another the principles which are elaborated in the following pages. Upon the occasion of each of the above addresses the writer was urged by many to expand the views expressed into a book. This he has here attempted to do, and submits the result to the judgment of his brethren. The aim has been constructive and irenic in the highest sense. Of course the author has frankly taken issue with those of other faiths in the exposition of his own views where occasion required. Edgar Mullins explains the Baptist faith and the history of the church in North America, and reviews the doctrines, practices and principles of Baptism as a modern denomination. Published in the early 20th century, this book sets out the tenets of the Baptist church - the rights and privileges afforded to believers, and how the church seeks to be in accordance with the laws of the United States. Of particular concern is the separation of church and state, which is provided for in the U.S. Constitution - determined to be a modern, respectful establishment, the Baptist church explicitly states its respect for the laws of the American forefathers. Indeed, the aim of the Baptist movement is to contribute and better the lives of Americans, and by extension people living all around the world. Social harmony, whereby neighbors and communities live in an atmosphere of mutual respect and regard, is something the denomination wishes to promote as a responsible, moral organization. Baptists believe that the love of God is universal, and every believer has a right to consult and receive counsel from the Lord, that they may carry out His will for the betterment of all.
