It tells the story of our treatment of the native in the past, it aims at depicting the life he lives on his own ancestral hunting grounds, and it gives some little account of the various missions and their influence upon him. Attempts are made, in the course of the chapters, to get at the inner working of his mind, to try and find out what the ideas and motives are which sway him, and what the principles of conduct which lie behind his outward acts. The reader will judge how far I have succeeded and how far failed. After all, the Australian aboriginal is much more than an interesting savage, whose customs must be put on record before he becomes extinct. He is a man with a soul - a soul with a destiny - a soul for which Christ died.
