Excerpt from The Art of Curative Gymnastics The author desires particularly to express his obligations to Dr. J. H. Kellogg and his associates at the Battle Creek Sanitarium, for the inspiration and assistance they have given him, not only in the preparation of this book, but also for the opportunity afforded him for the development of this system. He desires, also, to express his gratitude to his teachers in Stockholm, Sweden, who instilled into him that enthusiasm and earnestness so characteristic of all true disciples of the great pioneer, Pehr Henrik Ling. Excerpt from Swedish Movements, or Medical Gymnastics Although known in this country for thirty years or more, the practice of Swedish movements has, until very recently, been con fined to scarcely more than half a dozen individuals, excluding, of course, those who, although attempting to practice the Swedish sys tem, have had so slight a knowledge of the subject that they cannot properly be said to have employed it. Within the last few years, however, the knowledge of the many cures effected by this system in cases otherwise deemed incurable, and especially the growth of interest in the physiological mode of treatment of disease, has created a widespread demand for a better knowledge respecting this system of medical gymnastics, which, though so little used in this and most other countries, has been very extensively employed in Sweden, the place of its origin, for more than three quarters of a century. It is for the purpose of meeting this demand for informa tion in relation to one of the most effective of therapeutic agencies, that this translation has been prepared. A few fragmentary works have previously appeared, but up to the present there has been no English publication upon this subject which could be regarded as authoritative. Excerpt from Of Massage: And Remedial Gymnastics In preparing the present edition many amplifications and additions have been made to the text in both parts of the work, and this has entailed a certain amount of rearrangement of the existing matter. The additions have been made in order to provide a more useful text-book and book of reference for students of massage, and also in the hope of meeting the requirements of those who are qualifying as medical gymnasts. In Part I. the chapter on the Skeleton has been extensively amplified, and certain additions have been made to the chapters on the Articulations and the Nervous System. Some rearrangement of the Tables of the Muscles has been made, and an additional column, giving their action, has been inserted. In Part II. Chapter II. an alteration has been made in the classification of the various massage movements. Formerly in many British Schools petrissage and kneading have been synonymous terms, also effleurage and stroking. In the Swedish Schools, on the contrary, there is a distinction between the terms in each case. This difference of nomenclature leads to a good deal of unnecessary confusion in the minds of those students who happen to pass from one training school to the other. Therefore, in the present edition it has seemed expedient to adopt the more minute classification which pertains in the Swedish Schools. An additional chapter on Remedial Gymnastics has been introduced and is arranged in tabular form; the author wishes to express her indebtedness here to Dr. Arvedsen and to Professor Wide, M.D., whose works she has consulted in compiling this part of the book. In subsequent chapters more space has been devoted to the Theory of Disease and to Applied Treatment, and tables of exercises for various conditions have been added. In the last chapter a description of Ionic Medication, Radiant Heat and Light treatment, and Diathermy has been given. My special thanks are again due to Dr. R. Atkinson Stoney for his generous help in reading and criticising my manuscript and in correcting the proofs. I have also much pleasure in acknowledging my indebtedness to Dr. F. Barrie Lambert, to Dr. R. T. Timberg, and to Dr. W. S. Haughton for reading and criticising certain portions of Part II. My thanks are due to Messrs. Spencer, Heath, and George for their kindness in lending blocks for the illustrations of the gymnastic apparatus, and I am also grateful for permission to use some of the new illustrations from Cunningham's Text-Book of Anatomy to illustrate Part I. Excerpt from Massage and Medical Gymnastics Massage and Physical Exercises have formed a branch of medical and surgical treatment from time immemorial and in all countries, a fact demonstrated by Dr. Kleen in his historical introduction; and Dr. Kleen's work is a classic upon the subject which deserves the widest possible circulation throughout the world. Its translation into English may therefore be welcomed as a very real step in the diffusion of scientific knowledge upon these methods of treatment. Naturally the author's views will receive criticism when they come to be read by English-speaking people. Swedish methods of massage and gymnastics are not universally accepted as gospel. Sound and considered criticism is healthy, and Dr. Kleen would himself be the last to raise objection to it. But the great scientific work that has been done by the Swedish schools during the last hundred years has undoubtedly done more to place this branch of treatment upon an acknowledged footing than has that of any other group of workers. The necessity for the general study of physical methods of treatment has been demonstrated afresh in the work of war surgery. Too often have we seen the wonderful work done for the wounded by surgeons at military hospitals robbed of its final success by failure to secure the eventual functional utility of the damaged member by the use of appropriate physical methods. And of all the methods of physiotherapy the use of natural movements introduced in scientifically conducted physical exercises must always remain the foremost. The treatment of these late results of wounds and injuries has aroused an interest in orthopaedic surgery that is unprecedented. Orthopaedic surgery includes something much more than the simple prevention and correction of deformities. The orthopaedic surgeon should think in terms of "Function," and his endeavour should be to restore the affected part to its full normal functional activity, or if this is impossible to secure the very best possible return of functional utility. In this final restoration physical exercise must necessarily take a leading part. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Home Gymnastics for the Preservation and Restoration of Health in Children and Young and Old People of Both Sexes: With a Short Method of Acquiring the Art of Swimming The whole system - educational, as well as medical, gymnastics - has, on the Continent, acquired the name rational gymnastics, on account of its being based on truly scientific principles, Ling never using a movement of which he could not scientifically demonstrate the physiological effects. Excerpt from Power and Health Through Progressive Exercise It must not be thought, however, that this book deals wholly with heavy gymnastics, weight-lifting, and feats of strength. Many light exercises are given as being valuable to promote elasticity and suppleness; and, in addi tion to these, - as an apprenticeship of mode rate exercises is absolutely necessary in order that one may become capable of the simplest exhibition of force, - many intermediate exer cises are carefully described, and their effects discussed. The effects of common indoor and outdoor athletic sports and exercises are gone into. All which, it is hoped, will make this volume a complete manual of physical culture, suitable alike for those boys and girls, men and women, who may wish, without the aid of a teacher, to make the best of their bodies.
