This is the fourth volume of A History of the University of Cambridge and explores the extraordinary growth in size and academic stature of the University between 1870 and 1990. Though the University has made great advances since the 1870s, when it was viewed as a provincial seminary, it is also the home of tradition: a federation of colleges, one over 700 years old, one of the 1970s. This book seeks to penetrate the nature of the colleges and of the federation; and to show the way in which university faculties and departments have come to vie with the colleges for this predominant role. It attempts to unravel a fascinating institutional story of the society of the University and its place in the world. It explores in depth the themes of religion and learning, and of the entry of women into a once male environment. There are portraits of seminal and characteristic figures of the Cambridge scene, and there is a sketch - inevitably selective but wide-ranging - of many disciplines, an extensive study in intellectual and academic history.

Excerpt from The Architectural History of the University of Cambridge, and of the Colleges of Cambridge and Eton, Vol. 1 It would, however, be a mistake to suppose that he was then approaching the subject for the first time. When collecting materials for his Are/zz'leetzzm/ Nomen claim/e of Me Middle Ages, published by the Cambridge Antiquarian Society in 1844, he found that the changes in detail and in general treatment Observed in the colle giate structures could not be satisfactorily explained without an inquiry into the various dates at which those structures had been originally built, or additions made to them. This inquiry he then determined to undertake. The lecture, therefore, was only one stage in the develop ment of an original idea. Robert Willis' monumental architectural history of the University of Cambridge, first published in 1886 in a revised and extended edition by his nephew J. W. Clark, was hailed as 'one of the most important contributions to the social and intellectual history of England which has ever been made by a Cambridge man.' These fully illustrated volumes are here reprinted in their entirety, with a modern introduction by Professor David Watkin. Although Willis and Clark has always been recognised by those interested generally in the conservation of buildings and in the historic development of architectural style and taste, its unique collection of over three hundred plans, antique and specially commissioned engravings is alone sufficient to make this an indispensable work of reference on Cambridge architecture before the onset of the modern age.
