Excerpt from The Analysis and Softening of Boiler-Water This work undertaken with the collaboration of a chemist is made necessary in consequence of numerous subsequent inquiries regarding the essay appearing in the Journal for the Advancement of Railway Interests (Organ fur die Fortschritte des Eisenbahnwesens) of the year 1893 On the Examination and Softening of Boiler Feed-water (Ueber die Untersuchung und das Weichmachen des Kesselspeisewassers). In the above new work it was sought to show the chemical procedure on which water purification is based, and exhibit a short and simple water analysis, and method of calculating the quantities of reagents required for water softening to be used in practice. In it the information most vitally needed for practical water analysis and purification is reiterated and the other results of my previous essay are presented for use. Besides this, the report on feed-water was written opportunely by the author for the commission of Austrian Railway Managers at the Railway Exposition (Paris, 1900), and as a result it was followed by the Report of the Technical Committee of the Society of German Railway Managers which was drawn up in the year 1902. This classic book on boiler feed-water applies the principles of chemistry and physics to a practical engineering problem. The detailed discussion of the analysis and softening of feed-water is enlightening, and the clear explanations make this book accessible to engineers and non-engineers alike. Whether you're an engineer looking to improve your understanding of boiler systems or simply interested in the science of water, this book is an essential resource. Excerpt from Boiler Water Analysis The above mentioned compounds of calcium and magnew sium are the cause of most of the trouble with boiler waters, which deposit scale and they are also the cause of a great loss in the thermal efficiency of a steam power plant. Rankine states that if the conduction of heat of wrought iron is taken as 1, that of corper is of slate of brick of calcium carbonate of calcium sulphate Experiments run under the dire0 tion of Breckenridge show that the loss in efficiency due to a scale thick was per cent. Excerpt from Analytical Control of Water Softening: Thesis Water is used in practically all modern human industries in quantities so vast and applications so various and its quality is so different that the question of water supply is one of the most important considerations in the establishment of an industry. The importance of the quality of a water varies with the purposes for which it is to be used. A highly mineralized water is not suitable for use in steam making and in the household if for no other reason than that it is uneconomical. Iron bearing waters cannot be used in some industries and arts because of the tendency it has to stain. All industries using large quantities of water must have a relatively pure water, or at least a water suited to its specific purpose. Excerpt from Water Softening and Purification: The Softening and Clarification of Hard and Dirty Waters Rain water and distilled water being unavail able, manufacturers have to depend either upon the town supply or upon the water which they can draw from springs, wells or streams. Such waters are generally what is called hard. Hard water contains in solution the bicarbonates, sulphates, chlorides or nitrates of lime and magnesia. The bicarbonate of iron, alumina and silica are also generally present in natural waters, but seldom in such proportion as to be of practical importance, rarely, in fact, amounting together to more than one grain per gallon.
