Excerpt from The American Medical Journal, 1875, Vol. 3 The tincture is not uniform, varying in strength and appearance. Whilst one sample would be colorless, another would deposit a brownish sediment. Again, the taste cannot be disguised, and gives the physician much trouble to overcome the prejudices or fears of his patients. As an illustration, I will state: I gave a very intelligent gentleman a preparation containing the tincture of phosphorus. In a few hours he returned. There being other persons in the office, he asked for a private interview. This being granted, he stated, that being a good friend to me, he desired to be careful that he should say nothing before others that might tend to destroy their confidence in my skill, etc. Whilst admitting the fact that all persons are liable to make mistakes, he hinted at the fact that some mistakes were followed by serious results. Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1875, Vol. 69 The disorder 13 not a frequent one, and has been chiefly commented upon in isolated cases. Whether from a distrust of results thus obtained, or from a real rarity of the affection, or whatever the cause, the medical journals and hospital reports may for years be searched in vain for any detailed records of it; and Dr. Frank Woodbury, to whom I am indebted for valuable assistance in the preparation of this paper for publication, has examined, without finding more than here and there an instance. Excerpt from The New York Medical Journal, 1875, Vol. 21 The enumeration I have now given nearly completes the list of regions to which the bloodless method is applicable. It cannot be employed in operations on the trunk, or on the face and neck, where surgeons would gladly, if possible, avail themselves of its advantages. These advantages, as claimed by Esmarch, are as follow: First, the prevention of a great loss of blood during the larger operations. It is assumed that this economy of the vital fluid will sometimes be the direct means of saving life; that it will render more certain and speedy the healing process, and di minish the frequency of septicemia and pyaemia. The other principal advantage of the method is the facility with which it enables the surgeon to accomplish deep and difficult dis sections, the tissues not being obscured by blood. It is said also to permit the easy extraction of foreign bodies, and the thorough examination of diseased bones and joints, with the view of deciding upon the extent of operation necessary in any given case. Excerpt from The American Practitioner, 1875, Vol. 11: A Monthly Journal of Medicine and Surgery The study of the antipyretic Operation Of the cold-water treatment manifestly involves the mechanism of the production of heat within the body in health and disease, together with the laws which regulate the uniformity Of the normal temper ature. Recent views relating to these topics possess interest and importance, but they do not come within the scope Of this essay, and I shall now proceed to give an account Of the clinical researches - of Currie.* Currie's publications were by no means still-born; they were received with much consideration by his contemporaries. His method Of practice was adopted to a considerable extent in Great Britain and in other countries, and there was abundant testimony in its behalf; yet after a few years it passed almost entirely out Of medical practice. It was not altogether lost sight of. Trousseau, for example, in his Cliniqzze Medicale, advocated it in cases Of scarlet fever on the basis Of his own large experience. Most authors on practice and therapeutics have referred to it, but generally as a measure which had become Obsolete. Iwill venture to say that during the last half century very few have read his writings. I confess that I had not read them prior to a couple of years since, when from curiosity I Obtained his book, entitled Medical Reports on the effects of water, cold and warm, as a remedy in fever and other diseases whether applied to the surface of the body or used internally.
