Excerpt from The American Journal of Urology and Sexology, 1920, Vol. 16 In a similar way physicians are supposed to know all about sexology. One need confer with very few to discover that their actual knowledge is usually confined to obstetrics and in sexology they are often as ignorant and as bigoted as a fanatical clergyman. Neither has looked up the literature which modern sexology has produced and his opinions are little more if, as important, as those of any good natured policeman. Excerpt from The American Journal of Urology and Sexology, Vol. 15: With Which Have Been Consolidated the American Practitioner and the Pacific Medical Journal; January-December, 1919 This sexual theory is over-emphasized, and the Freudians, who urge sex as the basic origin of all dreams, of all obsessions, and of all longings, impulses, and neuroses, are sex-intoxicated, for in life's reality there are other primary and original instincts as well as sex, of which fear, anger, hunger, and the search for warmth are the com monest examples. All these run deep in the unconscious mind, and each has suffered far more repression than sex. It is against human experience that all dreams are desires, and it is repulsive that all dreams should be interpreted as relating to sex, and such an explana tion has brought these conclusions of what have been called chimney sweeping investigations into deserved disrepute. Excerpt from The American Journal of Urology and Sexology, Vol. 12: With Which Has Been Consolidated the American Practitioner; January-December, 1916 The first to which I shall refer was reported by Bergsdorf Of Kazan in 1907 and as at this date not much had been published on the subject, Bergsdorf hesitated as to the diagnosis Of a syphilitic reinfection, all the more so, because the second infection occurred within hardly fourteen months after the first. In this case the existence of a first syphilis is undeniable; there was the history Of a suspicious contagion, the clinical picture of the chancre was perfect and followed by a roseola. As to the second infection, there was a typical ulceration with corresponding lym phatic sclerosis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The American Journal of Urology and Sexology, Vol. 13: With Which Have Been Consolidated the American Practitioner and the Pacific Medical Journal; January-December, 1917 In the world of dreams time, space, and realities are disre garded. Impossible things become easy; fantasies become realities: the old are young again and distances are abolished; the dead are alive and the living are dead; inanimate objects are animate and an individual may have several personalities in one dream; the laws of the physical world are annihilated, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The American Journal of Urology and Sexology, Vol. 3: January, 1907 Having localized a hematuria as being of renal origin and recognizing that it is only a symptom of some local diseased con dition it is necessary to determine if possible its underlying cause. For this purpose it is insufficient in most instances to confine one's attention to the hematuria alone; one must consider all the other symptoms that the disease presents and all evidence that can be brought out by different methods of examination. In a large pro portion of renal hematurias it will be found that the bleeding de pends upon one of four conditions; malignant disease, calculus, tuberculosis or chronic nephritis. The relative frequency of these makes their recognition particularly important and I shall consider them before taking up any of the less well known causes of renal hematuria. “Heterosexuality,” assumed to denote a universal sexual and cultural norm, has been largely exempt from critical scrutiny. In this boldly original work, Jonathan Ned Katz challenges the common notion that the distinction between heterosexuality and homosexuality has been a timeless one. Building on the history of medical terminology, he reveals that as late as 1923, the term “heterosexuality” referred to a "morbid sexual passion," and that its current usage emerged to legitimate men and women having sex for pleasure. Drawing on the works of Sigmund Freud, James Baldwin, Betty Friedan, and Michel Foucault, The Invention of Heterosexuality considers the effects of heterosexuality’s recently forged primacy on both scientific literature and popular culture. “Lively and provocative.”—Carol Tavris, New York Times Book Review “A valuable primer . . . misses no significant twists in sexual politics.”—Gary Indiana, Village Voice Literary Supplement “One of the most important—if not outright subversive—works to emerge from gay and lesbian studies in years.”—Mark Thompson, The Advocate
