The fact that the adsorbing material is not chemically definite but has adsorbent properties dependent upon its method of prepara tion is not the least of the reasons for apparent lack of agreement both in experimental results and theoretical conclusions. Again, the possibility, and in many cases, the great probability of chemical reaction occurring during the process bring in another factor which is hard to control. Excerpt from Adsorption of Vapors by Silica Gel by a Dynamic Method: Dissertation Submitted to the Board of University Studies of the Johns Hopkins University in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy We were therefore surprised to discover that the results of the above careful static measurements made with the rigorous exclusion of all air were very accurately dupli cated by passing mixtures of sulphur dioxide and air over the gel until saturation was reached. In other words, the dynamic method gave the same results as the static method that was carried out with the exclusion of all air. Inasmuch as the dynamic method is much simpler from an experimental standpoint it was planned to measure the adsorption of a few vapours by this method. Anderson working in Zsigmondy's laboratory measured the adsorption of water, alcohol, and benzene by a static method, and although he worked in a vacuum it is obvious that he did not exercise sufficient precautions to remove the traces of air that interfere With the attainment of true equilibrium.
