The calcium hydroxide and magnesium metal were dissolved in boron free hydrochloric acid prepared by passing hydrogen chloride into distilled water. The solutions made slightly alkaline were evaporated and the residues dissolved in methanol. The boron was distilled as methyl borate from dilute hydrochloric acid solution and the boron was estimated colorimetrically with turmeric. A method is given for the determination of boron in dilute hydrochloric acid.

This report describes the adaptation of a colorimetric method, using curcumin as colorimetric reagent, to the determination of boron in uranium metal and some of its compounds. A feature of the method is a new method of dissolution of the oxides of uranium in sulphuric acid and potassium dichromate which avoids complications, such as incomplete recovery of boron in the distillation step, and reduces the introduction of extraneous boron from the reagents. The metal is converted to the oxide in the distillation apparatus in order to prevent losses of boron and the resulting oxide is dissolved in sulphuric acid and potassium dichromate. The method proposed for uranyl nitrate involves the reduction of nitrate by boiling under reflux with hydrazine sulphate in sulphuric acid solution. Good recoveries of boron are obtained by these procedures.
