To enlarge, however, on their past or present condition, would here be as much out of place as it would be to dwell on St. John's vision of heaven, where he receives intimation of the things that were to be hereafter; Rev. iv. 1. and from whence, --God's throne being placed, as it--6. were, on a flat sea of glass, as transparent as crystal, spreading out in front, --the celestial eye could survey everything in the world below. Suffice it to say, that St. John has a vision of the Book which had the account written within of what was to happen, sealed with seven seals, which Christ, --v. 1. It is to be observed that St. John does not, like the other Evangelists, enter on the subject of the last judgment in his Gospel, having anticipated that he should have to treat of the same in his Book of Revelation. who is also seen and acknowledged as the Lamb that was slain for mankind, and who ever lives--14. with God, --was alone able to open. The position and power of Christ being thus established, the first seal is opened by him, and vi. 1. the spirit of Christianity is revealed, as a warrior on a white horse, emblematic of purity and power, --2. with the bow of battle and the crown of victory, going forth to subdue the world to righteousness. The second seal reveals a red horse, the colour--3. being emblematic of the opposing spirit of Popery; this spirit is gifted with the power of taking peace--4. from the earth; and a great sword is given to it, indicating great dissensions and destruction of life. The third seal reveals a black horse, whose--5. rider held a pair of balances, or scales, in which to weigh the just measure of punishment to the Rev. vi. 6. bad, without hurting the oil and wine, or the good.--
