English grammar is often said to be over-complicated and difficult to get to grips with but the truth is that, while there are certain rules that should be obeyed, the language evolves and develops over time - and quite rightly so. In this book, Joseph Piercy outlines the 25 rules that should be adhered to in written and spoken English, defining the rules themselves and then decoding them for the layman so that he or she understands each rule and how it has been used and developed over time. In doing so, the author highlights the most common misuses - or plain errors - in the language, while also setting the reader on to the right path to speaking and writing in good, plain English.

In the ancient scholarly curriculum, grammar formed part of the Trivium, with its sister sciences of logic and rhetoric. Logic asks: When is a sentence true? Rhetoric asks: Which is the right sentence? Grammar purely asks: When is a sentence correct? In Grammar, Rachel Grenon defines the rules governing the construction of words, phrases, sentences, and extended text or speech. Beginning with the rules behind ancient languages such as Sanskrit and Greek, she then focuses on how the rules of English have developed-from nouns and pronouns, verbs and adverbs, to tenses, the passive voice, questions, imperatives, and much more. With diagrams, engravings, and witty cartoon illustrations, this original take on a classic subject is essential for anyone interested in language.

These fifty humorous misrules of grammar will open the eyes of writers of all levels to fine style. How Not to Write is a wickedly witty book about grammar, usage, and style. William Safire, the author of the New York Times Magazine column "On Language," homes in on the "essential misrules of grammar," those mistakes that call attention to the major rules and regulations of writing. He tells you the correct way to write and then tells you when it is all right to break the rules. In this lighthearted guide, he chooses the most common and perplexing concerns of writers new and old. Each mini-chapter starts by stating a misrule like "Don't use Capital letters without good REASON." Safire then follows up with solid and entertaining advice on language, grammar, and life. He covers a vast territory from capitalization, split infinitives (it turns out you can split one if done meaningfully), run-on sentences, and semi-colons to contractions, the double negative, dangling participles, and even onomatopoeia. Lessons on topics such as sentence fragments or parts of speech begin with several examples, and follow them with directed questions that help students arrive at a grammatical principle or rule. Following the questions and a brief discussion, each lesson has a definition, set in a box for emphasis. Lessons also contain boxed hints that aid students in understanding and retaining points of grammar. Exercises are both traditional and innovative, and provide practice as well as increase general knowledge. Students read sentences and pick out various points of grammar, but they also follow sentence patterns, write their own sentences, choose effective modifiers, or combine sentences. In all books, lessons build on each other: the lesson on compound sentences, for example, appears not long after students have learned what constitutes a sentence and right after they have been introduced to the conjunction. Each book also contains a Comprehensive Exercises section that provides review exercises and includes errors for students to correct. Book 3 includes work on dependent clauses, complex and compound-complex sentences, gerunds, participles, and infinitives. Grades 9-10.
