The Mon-Khmer project took a long journey before it was turned into a final product--the first comprehensive collection of articles on Mon-Khmer peoples of the Mekong Region. The project was started in 2001 by the first editor of the book, Dr. Ronald D. Renard, who unfortunately did not see the final product of his valuable work. During 1995-1996, Dr. Ron Renard, as the manager of the UNDP Highland People project, and I travelled to Northeast Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos to explain to representatives of ethnic communities the aim of the project and how the ethnic minorities, many of whom are Mon-Khmer, could be involved and benefit from it. It may well be that this encounter with these ethnic groups made him expand his intellectual interest to study them in addition to the Karen in Thailand whose history of integration into the Siamese state he had studied for his dissertation completed in 1980. According to my last conversation with Ron, it was during the time when he worked for the Journal of Siam Society in the late 1990s that he decided to embark upon the Mon-Khmer project which preoccupied the last part of his academic life.

A compelling, lively narrative history of the peoples and cultures of the great river of Southeast Asia, The Mekong spans two thousand years--from the dawn of civilization on the Mekong Delta to the political and environmental challenges the region faces today. Beginning with the rise of ancient seafaring civilizations at Oc Eco and moving on to the glory of the Cambodian empire in the first millennium, through European colonization and the struggle for independence in the twentieth century, Osborne traces the history of the region that comprises the modern nations of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Burma, and China. Vibrant, insightful, and eminently readable, The Mekong is a rousing history of a dynamic region that has fascinated readers the world over.

In 'floating', photographer Jens Nagels takes us on a journey through Southeast Asia. From one place to the next, adrift from one encounter to another, he takes everything in with the watchful eye of a traveler. He records everyday life with his camera, even things that perhaps do not seem important at first glance. But he overrules this and takes these things with him because they are actually unique. The result is a mosaic of photos, sorted in groups and according to themes, which invites us to look more closely, make comparisons and discover the everyday and cultural rites.

The 11 countries (Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Timor, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei) of Southeast Asia include over 600 million people. Despite great linguistic and cultural diversity, the region is characterized by the relatively favorable position of women in comparison with neighboring East Asia or South Asia. The position of women in Southeast Asia is often cited as evidence that women are not universally subjugated to men. In the context of women's status, this book examines the social system in Southeast Asia during the pre-colonial, colonial, and modern periods. The book first explains the geography of the region and describes the role of women in relation to men. Further chapters are devoted to the individual countries of the region. The book also includes two appendices: one describing the eminent women who have influenced the social, political, and cultural lives of Southeast Asia; and the other narrating the harrowing tales of comfort stations run by the Japanese Imperial Forces during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) and the Pacific War/World War II (1941-1945).
