This volume contains the proceedings of the latest in a series of international symposia on advances in neuro-oncology, held September 26-29, 1990, in San Remo, Italy and sponsored by the University of Pavia, I.R.C.C.S. Policlinico San Matteo (Pavia, Italy) and the Giovanni Lorenzini Medical Foundation (Milan-Houston). It drew papers from six continents of the world, was attended by over 500 investigators, and demonstrated the extraordinary vitality, depth and breadth of research which characterizes modem neuro-oncology. Over the course of the last decade, there has been a remarkable shift in research carried out in the heterogeneous field of neuro-oncology, which appears to be away from clinical descriptive studies, and toward more basic and fundamental investigation of the pathology, immunohis tochemistry, biochemical and cellular subsets of brain tumors. Besides the traditional fields of neurology, neurosurgery, neuropathology, and radiation therapy, there has been an increased interest and involvement by investigators in the fields of medical oncology, neuroradiology, immunology, and many areas of fundamental neurobiology. It has become evident that interest has also been exhibited in a broader spectrum of tumors than just the malignant glial series, and studies in meningioma, craniopharyngioma, neurinomas, and the pituitary tumors were reported. This book traces the formation of the archaeological site of Carthage and how it re-emerged in the minds of European antiquarians and travellers in the early modern world. For almost 1,600 years the ancient city sat on the north coast of Africa, dominating the central Mediterranean until its fall in 698 CE. One of the oldest cities in the Mediterranean, it was founded in legend by the Tyrian queen Dido and destroyed after epic wars with Rome. It was soon reborn as a Roman city, and late in antiquity evolved into a centre for Christian worship. In the 17th and 18th centuries, when European explorers first arrived, searching for the site of Carthage, they were amazed that almost nothing of its former glory remained and lamented its loss. The gradual and sometimes controversial exploration of Carthage has, over the last two centuries, brought the story of this renowned ancient city back into the public imagination. This book takes a new approach to interwar Prague by addressing religion as an integral part of the city's cultural history. Berglund views Prague's cultural history in the broader context of religious change and secularization in 20th-century Europe. Based on detailed knowledge of sources, the monograph explores the interdisciplinary linkages between politics, architecture and theology in the building of symbolism and a "new mythology" of the first Czechoslovak republic (1918-1938). Berglunds text provides an important service for understanding both Czech history as well as current Czech political debate. The author's method can be characterized as culture history, able to connect several disciplines, emphasizing common topic (religion, politics, symbolics). Modern Czech elites, superficially characterized as "ateistic", appears in a new light to be deeply religious, a transition from more traditional, (mostly) Catholic religiosity, to a concept of a new, modern, ethical religion. The study incorporates biographical research, focusing on three principal characters: Tomás Garrigue Masaryk, Czechoslovakia's first president; his daughter Alice Garrigue Masaryková, founding director of the Czechoslovak Red Cross; and Joze Plecnik, the Slovenian architect who directed the renovations of Prague Castle.
