The existing formalism used to describe spin observables in neutron transmission experiments is found to be inadequate. A suitable formalism is developed, through which time-reversal violating (and parity non-conserving) forward scattering amplitudes are identified, along with their corresponding spin observables. It is noted that new and more precise tests of T-symmetry are provided in transmission experiments and that such investigations are applicable more generally in nuclear and particle physics.

Time reversal invariance violating (TRIV) effects in neutron transmission through a nuclear target are discussed. Here, we demonstrate the existence of a class of experiments that are free from false asymmetries. We discuss the enhancement of TRIV effects for neutron energies corresponding to p-wave resonances in the compound nuclear system. Finaly, we analyze a model experiment and show that such tests can have a discovery potential of 102-104 compared to current limits.

The NEWS99 international symposium discusses symmetries in electroweak processes in nuclei. Many phenomena in nuclear and particle physics are related to symmetry. It is known that we are living in a left-handed world as far as the Weak interaction is concerned, but neutrino physics suggests that a right-handed world may also be relevant. Chiral symmetry and its breaking plays an essential role in generating hadron masses. Symmetries related to flavor in the strong interaction like isospin, SU(3) and so on are known to be violated although they play a crucial role for the understanding of phenomena in nuclear and particle physics. Real and imaginary part of the E2-M1 mixing ratio of the 73 keV transition in Ir193 were determined in an arrangement that requires no correction for Faraday rotation and isomer shift. The parameters, E-gamma = 73.8 keV, g1/2 = 0.9408, R-delta = 0.556, H = 1.437 MG, and f = 0.5, were determined. The value Im-delta = (+1.0 plus or minus 1.7) x 0.001 results in a phase angle between E2 and M1 of eto = (+1.8 plus or minus 3.0) x 0.001, thus showing no evidence for a T violation. (Author).
