This thesis addresses the application issues raised implementing flight control designs derived from optimal control theory and the challenges in obtaining acceptable handling qualities when using these techniques. Using the USAF TPS FCS project as the controller architecture, four controllers were designed using classical methods, and H2, H3, and mixed H2/H optimal control theory. These designs were implemented in the Calspan VSS II Learjet, simulating unstable aircraft longitudinal dynamics and a limited handling qualities flight test evaluation was performed. The design phase found the optimal control techniques, as applied, difficult to design to handling qualities specifications. The H2, H3 and mixed H2/H controllers were unstable and often contained high frequency poles, which were difficult to implement. The flight test rated the designs acceptable on approach, but no handling qualities level for approach was determined.

The analysis and preliminary design of an advanced technology transport aircraft flight control system using avionics and flight control concepts appropriate to the 1980-1985 time period are discussed. Specifically, the techniques and requirements of the flight control system were established, a number of candidate configurations were defined, and an evaluation of these configurations was performed to establish a recommended approach. Candidate configurations based on redundant integration of various sensor types, computational methods, servo actuator arrangements and data-transfer techniques were defined to the functional module and piece-part level. Life-cycle costs, for the flight control configurations, as determined in an operational environment model for 200 aircraft over a 15-year service life, were the basis of the optimum configuration selection tradeoff. The recommended system concept is a quad digital computer configuration utilizing a small microprocessor for input/output control, a hexad skewed set of conventional sensors for body rate and body acceleration, and triple integrated actuators.

This thesis addresses the application of optimal, multiobjective control theory control theory to flight control design for the approach and landing phase of flight. Five flight control systems were designed using classical, H2, H infinity, and Mixed H2/H infinity methods. The MATLAB(Trade Mark) MUTOOLS(Trade Mark) and AFIT MXTOOLS toolboxes were used to produce the optimal, multiobjective designs. These designs were implemented for flight test on the Calspan VSS I Learjet, simulating the unstable longitudinal dynamics of an F-16 type aircraft. A limited handling qualities investigation was performed. Model following was used in the design phase to meet handling qualities specifications. The designs were successfully implemented and verified on the Calspan Learjet prior to flight test. An unmodeled aircraft mode was discovered just prior to flight test that made three of the designs slightly unstable. However, all of the designs achieved Level II or better Cooper-Harper handling qualities ratings for the landing tasks performed illustrating that the optimal multiobjective methods used can give acceptable or better handling qualities.
