En el complejo contexto de seguridad africano el Sahel se identifica como un agujero negro —del que escasamente conocemos su realidad social, política y económica— y como un foco de preocupación, tanto por sus recurrentes tensiones y conflictos como por la supuesta amenaza terrorista de alcance global que allí florece. En un contexto internacional dominado obsesivamente por la mal llamada “guerra contra el terror” confluyen los intereses de actores gubernamentales locales, regionales e internacionales por enfatizar la gravedad de dicha amenaza. Mientras que se descuidan otros problemas no menos serios, aumenta la manipulación de datos y la profusión de rumores no bien fundamentados, empeñados en justificar la necesidad de intervenir para frenar a un supuesto terrorismo que Al Qaeda y otros grupos locales estarían desarrollando en la región. Convertido para algunos en el frente principal de esa guerra global contra el terrorismo, diversos actores mueven sus piezas para dirimir el control de una zona de creciente importancia geoeconómica. El objetivo de esta obra es dar a conocer la región y sus problemas, detallar los perfiles precisos de esa hipotética amenaza y apuntar otras vías de respuesta distintas a las ensayadas, por ejemplo, en Irak.
