Excerpt from Tenth Annual Report of the Insurance Commissioners, Vol. 1: Of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, January 1, 1865; Marine and Fire Insurance The returns received by the Insurance Commissioners from Fire and Marine Insurance Companies doing business in this Commonwealth are from 106 companies chartered by it, and 78 companies chartered in other States or England. Of our own companies, 34 are on the joint stock or specific cash capital plan; 13 have a capital of notes and are partly mutual, and 59 are purely mutual. These home companies have received during the year for premiums, in cash or notes payable in cash, about seven and a half millions of dollars, and have paid losses on their policies amounting to a little more than five and a half millions. The general business has shown about the usual ratio of loss to amount insured, and to premiums received, and losses have perhaps been more equally distributed among the companies in proportion to their means than usual. It may be interesting here to note the regularity, in the aggregate, of the ratio of loss to amount insured, of the fire business of all our companies. We have the means of giving conveniently only the last eight years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Probably there is no other class of institutions holding large trusts less sub ject to sudden and forcible conversion or change of invest ments than the life companies, and hence none able to show better average earnings and results and in the report of inter est earned during the year, the rate per cent. So far, then, as the amount of property to protect the policy obligations and the mortality and interest experiences are con cerned, the conditions are favorable and satisfactory. The volume of business done and the grand totals of amounts in force show relatively the same increase as in the previous year, and are indicative of active and healthy conditions, and that with return of business activity there will be no lagging of enterprise or lack of progress. Excerpt from Eighteenth Annual Report of the Insurance Commissioner of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Vol. 2: January 1, 1873; Life and Accident Insurance But it is a curious fact in this connection, that some Com panics transacting the smallest amount of business frequently require a much longer time to make up their returns than others whose business is vastly greater, the former being occasionally unable to render their statements under two and a half or three months. Most of the Companies, we are happy to say, are commendably prompt in this matter, and if all would emulate the example of the United States Life, of New York, both their own and the business at large would derive material benefit. The United States promptly closed its books on the last day of the year, and its annual state ments were almost immediately ready for delivery, yet its business is as widely extended as that of many Companies which take from one to two months for that purpose. Such punctuality and promptness are highly creditable, and attest the excellence of executive management. Let us hope for an extension of such usage.
