Excerpt from Tenth Annual Report of the Insurance Commissioners, Vol. 1: Of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, January 1, 1865; Marine and Fire Insurance The returns received by the Insurance Commissioners from Fire and Marine Insurance Companies doing business in this Commonwealth are from 106 companies chartered by it, and 78 companies chartered in other States or England. Of our own companies, 34 are on the joint stock or specific cash capital plan; 13 have a capital of notes and are partly mutual, and 59 are purely mutual. These home companies have received during the year for premiums, in cash or notes payable in cash, about seven and a half millions of dollars, and have paid losses on their policies amounting to a little more than five and a half millions. The general business has shown about the usual ratio of loss to amount insured, and to premiums received, and losses have perhaps been more equally distributed among the companies in proportion to their means than usual. It may be interesting here to note the regularity, in the aggregate, of the ratio of loss to amount insured, of the fire business of all our companies. We have the means of giving conveniently only the last eight years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Forty-Sixth Annual Report of the Insurance Commissioner of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, January 1, 1901, Vol. 2: Life, Casualty and Assessment Insurance These investments, of so great volume and variety, necessa rily participate in the character of all the sound and reliable properties of the country; and, although there have been and may be periods of depression which affect nominally all values, there exists no necessity for any changes of investment on that account by the companies when the wave passes they are found again in the same general condition as the average of the substantial investments of the community. Probably there is no other class of institutions holding large trusts less sub ject to sudden and forcible conversion or change of invest ments than the life companies, and hence none able to show better average earnings and results and in the report of inter est earned during the year, the rate per cent. Realized shows no material variation from that of recent years, and that the reserves in this respect are well protected. So far, then, as the amount of property to protect the policy obligations and the mortality and interest experiences are con cerned, the conditions are favorable and satisfactory. The volume of business done and the grand totals of amounts in force show relatively the same increase as in the previous year, and are indicative of active and healthy conditions, and that with return of business activity there will be no lagging of enterprise or lack of progress. Excerpt from Fifty-Fifth Annual Report of the Insurance Commissioner of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, January 1, 1910, Vol. 2: Life, Miscellaneous, Assessment and Fraternal Insurance One of the marked changes in the laws relating to insurance made by the Legislature of the present year was the enactment of the statute providing standard provisions for health and accident poli cies. This act goes into effect J an. 1, 1911, and is substantially like the law enacted in New York the present year. This act is the result of work done by the insurance commissioners of the various States, who, seeing that policies issued by accident companies were in many respects unsatisfactory, determined to draft a bill and offer it for consideration to the Legislatures of their several States. It is expected that many other States besideslnew York and Massachu setts will enact this bill into law, and thus give practical uniform legislation on this question in a very large proportion of the States. This will be in the interest of the companies as well as the policy holders, and is simply a step in the direction of uniform legislation, which should be followed, and doubtless will be followed, by other attempts on the part of the insurance commissioners to pave the way for harmonizing the essential provisions of the insurance laws of the various State-s as far as practicable.
