Written by hobby farmer Cherie Langlois from Washington state, Ducks is a fantastic overview of these entertaining and adaptable waterfowl. The author begins by asking "What do these water-crazy birds have that make them as much an asset to farms as landlubbing poultry?" She provides many answers that defend the virtues and versatility of ducks and argues that the duck is superior to the ubiquitous chicken in many ways. As a zoologist, Langlois has a gift for elucidating the details of the waterfowl's anatomy, traits and behavior, all revealed in the first chapter "Meet the Duck." She proceeds by leading readers through the process of choosing the right ducks for their hobby farm, considering the various domestic breeds (from bantams to heavyweights) as well as the sex of the birds and number of birds/breeds ideal for beginning a hobby-farm flock. The book offers advice on housing these very adaptable birds that thrive in various climates and regions throughout the world: space requirements, ventilation, flooring, feeders, and fencing. Naturally, ducks need water to thrive in the form of an existing lake, a manmade pond or simple duck pools, all discussed in the housing chapter. "The Duck Diet" chapter discusses the nutritional needs of the flock and various feeding options farmers and ranchers can consider. Seasoned duck aficionados interested in getting into the business of ducklings will find much information in the breeding chapter, which catalogs methods for hatching, incubators, mama duck and baby care, and more. The health of livestock is always a major consideration for the hobby farmer, and the chapter "Flock Health and Handling" offers a mini course in disease prevention, proper hygiene, recognizing symptoms of illnesses, and dealing with common maladies. The advantages of duck farming;the superior quality of duck eggs, down, and meat--are the focal point of the final chapter "Harvesting the Rewards," likely the first chapter the dubious duck farmer will read prior to taking the dive into ducks. The book concludes with appendices of endangered duck breeds and duck diseases, resources, a glossary of terms, and a complete index.

Charles Simeon ministered for over fifty years in one parish at the heart of Cambridge during the bleak period of English national life between the French Wars and the passing of the Reform Bill. He was considered by Lord Macaulay to have had greater influence on the life of the church than any primate. Soundly converted in his first term at King's College, he was appointed Vicar of Holy Trinity in 1782, combining the incumbency with a Fellowship and various academic posts. Highly unpopular at first on account of both his message and his manner, scorned and abused for many years, he carried on regardless of other's opinions until in the end he became perhaps the best known and best respected name in Cambridge. Hot-tempered but warm-hearted, impetuous but infinitely patient, a man of imposing, even remarkable appearance, he was a "character," about whom the most entertaining stories are eagerly recounted. As a Christian of independent mind and strong convictions, he found his spiritual strength in a lifetime of deep devotion and strict personal discipline; as a biblical preacher he was the first for many generations to see the possibility and importance of teaching others how to expound the Scriptures; as a pastor and evangelist his work with both town and gown was marked by a rare faithfulness and zeal. Limited all his life to the one center of spiritual activity, he yet was the moving spirit in the formation of the Church Missionary Society, and an enthusiastic supporter of the Bible Society and of work among the Jews.

The traditional pastoral role has changed over the last decades, largely due to the growth of mega-churches. The senior pastor has tended to become more an executive leader with an emphasis on public preaching as the figurehead of a large organisation. The traditional pastoral role has been superseded in large part in these situations, with much of the regular pastoral role being performed by a range of associate pastors/elders with a primary function as pastors, with little if any preaching component. In the past, many churches did not have any pastoral assistance, and often the pastor was assisted by deacons, performing de facto pastoral roles, whilst also performing the normal administrative functions usually ascribed to deacons. This has meant that often the expectancy of performing this de facto pastoral role, has led to a more selective process for choosing deacons, often precluding some well-equipped and gifted men from a serving ministry because they did not simultaneously qualify as elders. We look at the pastoral role generally, but with a view to multiplying this role in order to meet the needs of growing congregations through the introduction of elders. Some practical considerations are given for the transition to introduce these changes. Alongside this, what is the function of women in leadership ministries of the church?

Welcome to "If God is My Shepherd, Why Did I Stray From the Flock?", a journey of exploration, understanding, and hope. This book is more than just an inquiry into the reasons behind spiritual wandering; it is an invitation to rediscover the profound love and guidance of God, our Shepherd, even in moments when we find ourselves lost or distant. At some point in our spiritual journey, many of us face a crucial question: If we are under the watchful eye of a loving Shepherd, why do we stray? The world we navigate is complex and filled with distractions that can lead us away from our spiritual path. This book seeks to explore these complexities, offering insights and encouragement for those who may feel they have wandered far from their faith. Through the following chapters, we embark on a journey together. It’s a journey that starts with understanding the metaphor of God as a Shepherd – a portrayal rich in care, protection, and unwavering commitment. This image, deeply ingrained in the Christian tradition, sets the stage for our exploration of faith, wandering, and return. As we navigate through the chapters, we confront the realities of life that can lure us away from our faith. We grapple with the wilderness experiences – times of doubt, isolation, and spiritual dryness – and learn from those who have walked these paths before us. We delve into the process of turning back, the steps towards restoration, and the joy that comes with reuniting with our faith and community. But this book is more than just a narrative of straying and returning; it is a guide for deepening our relationship with God, understanding His unceasing love, and recognizing our role in the broader community of believers. It’s about learning to listen to the Shepherd's voice amidst life’s noise and understanding the profound impact of our journey on our eternal destiny. As we turn these pages, my hope is that you will find not just answers, but also comfort, guidance, and a renewed sense of purpose. Whether you are someone who feels they have strayed from the path, a believer seeking to deepen your faith, or simply curious about the Christian perspective on life’s wanderings, this book is for you. Let us journey together, guided by the wisdom of Scripture, the experiences of believers past and present, and the unchanging truth of God's love for each one of us. May this exploration bring clarity, hope, and a renewed commitment to walk closely with our Shepherd, today and always.
