Now, widowed and free again, she yearns to experience all the bright pleasures of a busy social life with the ton. She longs for romance at last and a new marriage to someone young, handsome, and charming. She fixes her interest upon a charismatic lord with a rakish reputation and dreams of changing him. Tom Russell, childhood friend of Felicity's, has never forgotten the passion that flared between them all too briefly before she chose Wren instead of him. But when she turns to him for support in her search for a new husband, he puts his own feelings aside in order to be the friend she needs. Even when she enlists his aid in making her lord jealous, he goes along with her scheme. Tom is perhaps too selfless and good-natured for his own good. And Felicity is perhaps too much in denial about her true feelings for her dearest friend.

Edward Marsh, Earl of Raymore, is a connoisseur of beauty, whether it be music or art or women. When he inherits two wards, however, and decides to marry them off as soon as possible during a London Season, he finds one of them virtually unmarriageable. Rosalind Dacey has none of the delicate, blond beauty of her cousin, and a pronounced limp resulting from a childhood riding accident has robbed her of grace and self-assurance. She resents what she sees as Edward's ruthless, high-handed tyranny, and he is infuriated by her outspoken stubbornness. Their volatile quarrels soon lead to passion of a different sort, however. And Rosalind possesses talent as a pianist that draws Edward secretly and against his will to listen, enthralled, to her daily practices in his music room.

Using detailed case studies, Beyond Deviant Damsels undermines many of the conventional assumptions about how women committed crime in the nineteenth century. Previous historical accounts generally constructed gendered stereotypes of women acting in self-defence, being lesser accomplices to male criminals, committing crimes that require little or no physical effort, or pursuing supposedly 'female' goals (such as material acquisition). This study countersthese gendered assumptions by examining instances where women tested society's boundaries through their own actions, ultimately presenting women as far more like men in their capacity and execution of criminal behaviour. The book shows examples where women acted far beyond these stereotypes, and showcases theexistence of cultural discussion of open-ended female misbehaviour in Victorian Britain - leading us to question the very role of stereotyping in the history of criminality. These individual challenges to a supposed gendered status quo in Victorian Britain did not produce spontaneous outrage, nor were attempts at controlling and eradicating such behaviour coherent or successful. As such Victorian society's treatment of women emerges as uncertain and confused as much as it was determinedlymoralistic. From this, Beyond Deviant Damsels seeks to re-evaluate our twenty-first-century perception of female criminals, by indicating that historiography may have been responsible for limiting the picture of Victorian female criminality and behaviour from that time until the present.

This is not a gentle story. I have not lived a gentle life. If while you're reading my story you become uncomfortable when I speak very openly about my sexual feelings, or if you get pissed at me for cussing all the time, or if it offends you when I curse God, that's perfectly okay. You have a right to your own feelings and opinions, and so do I. If I had tried to "pretty it up," it wouldn't be how it really happened.
