Poverty is possibly the most pressing problem in Mongolia today. Strong, rapid growth has been elusive in the tumultuous years following the collapse of communist rule, average incomes have fallen and inequality has grown. Economic collapse has been exacerbated by an unprecedented series of natural disasters in the rural livestock sector - the mainstay of the Mongolian economy and society.
