This book presents the contributions and outcome of a workshop held in Copenhagen March 1986. Kidney stone treatment methods were chosen for technology assement considerations because the development in this field is very dynamic. New treatment methods have emerged within a relatively short period - among these a European invention: Extra-corporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL). Many countries and regions are faced with decisions as to implementation and diffusion of these new treatment technologies; this book attempts to provide data to enable informed decisions to be made. Although new scientific evidence is constantly being added to the stock of knowledge and problems presented in this book, the basic framework for health technology assessment applied to the treatment of kidney stones is made clear by the various controbitions. The contents are divided in five parts: 1) Epidemiology and dissemination of ESWL in the EEC. 2) Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy and percutaneous lithotripsy. 3) Regional and temporal variations. 4) Technology assessment and development of a second generation of ESWL. 5) Group work and proposals for research activities.
