"Located on the Kaipara harbor in New Zealand, Te Tuhirangi Contour is one of Serra's latest site-specific works. The site is a vast open grass pasture with rolling elevations and curvilinear contours. The sculpture, made of hundreds of tons of steel, is located on one continuous contour, 843 feet long. Documented in Reinartz's black and white photography."--William Stout Architectural Books.

Mid-twentieth century sculpture underwent dramatic changes in aesthetic content and subject matter. New materials and the cross-pollination of artistic practices placed new emphasis on external surface and site-specificity. This led to a dissolution of the medium-specific categorisation of modern sculpture. This shift was noted by critic Michael Fried in his essay Art and Objecthood, that staked out the academic modernist position against minimalist art in nineteen-sixties America. Fried saw the lack of discernible content and ‘theatricality’ of minimalist sculpture as a problematic negation of deep meaning in formal abstract art. By comparison, Rosalind E. Krauss loosened the hegemonic modernist system of values to usefully critique the avant-garde practices of a diverse range of emerging sculptors. She developed a phenomenological sensibility that enhanced her formal readings of non-mimetic, often large-scale sculptures that were resistant to conventionalised interpretation. This thesis considers how both Fried and Krauss’ critical responses to the shifting dynamic of modern sculpture are helpful in situating the practice of Richard Serra, one of the major artists to emerge out of the iconoclastic period of the New York art world during the late nineteen-sixties. Tracing Serra’s development as an artist with a strong awareness of art history and involvement with contemporary process-based practitioners gives an account of how, by his incorporation of the traditional with the innovative in praxis, affords an understanding of the changes in sculpture at a pivotal moment in the medium’s history. Having evaluated the critical response to minimalist and post-minimalist sculpture to reflect upon the importance of Serra’s six-decade long career holds for twenty-first century viewers, I then introduce some key concepts from Martin Heidegger’s philosophy to offer a complementary methodology that synthesises Fried’s modernist rationale with Krauss’ increased sensitivity to phenomenological affect. Finally, by reevaluating the aesthetics of Cartesian consciousness I demonstrate how sculpture can afford access to ontologically important questions. I explore Heidegger’s concept of Dasein (being-there) in a personal encounter with Serra’s largest continuous landscape piece, Te Tuhirangi Contour (2000-2002). By combining the intellectual space of modernist theory with the lived experience of phenomenological investigation, I look to provide an account of how profound meaning is readily accessible in being with sculpture in the world.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential artists working today, Richard Serra is known in particular for his large steel sculptural forms, which deal primarily with investigations of weight, balance, density, and scale, as well as their effect on the viewer and his/her sense of space. Serra’s relentless pursuit of these questions over the course of his celebrated career has deepened our understanding of the effects of sculpture on space and perception, and broadened the scope of what we allow the genre to address. Published on the occasion of Serra’s exhibition Equal at David Zwirner, New York⎯called one of “the year’s best shows” by The New York Times—this catalogue is the first in-depth overview of the artist’s works in forged steel. While he had already become known for his works in vulcanized rubber, lead, and steel, Serra first began using forged steel after encountering a large-scale forge at a steel mill in Germany in 1977. Unlike casting, wherein steel is heated until molten and poured into a mold, forging is the process of changing metal’s shape while in a solid state, through extreme heat and pressure. Serra’s first forged sculpture was Berlin Block (For Charlie Chaplin) (1977), installed outside of the Mies van der Rohe–designed Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. Since then, he has continued to use this material in different configurations and formats to create works that use forged blocks, rounds, or lintels. Designed by McCall Associates in close collaboration with the artist, Richard Serra: Forged Steel presents a survey of Serra’s forged sculpture since 1977, featuring new scholarship by Richard Shiff and two texts by Serra, along with dramatic photographs of the forging process. Bringing together over sixty detailed plates of forged sculptures, this unique publication not only introduces readers to an important aspect of Serra’s work, but uses these works to return to the eternal questions of weight, balance, and perception in his practice.

Richard Serra's "reversal" drawings employ two identical rectangular sheets of paper that are adjoined in a vertical or horizontal format, with the black-and-white areas reversing themselves proportionally top to bottom (or left to right). Vertical and Horizontal Reversals is the most extensive presentation of Serra's reversal drawings to be published. It reproduces all thirty-three drawings shown in 2014's exhibition at David Zwirner in New York, including a group of new horizontal reversals.

Published to celebrate the critically acclaimed 2013 exhibition at David Zwirner in New York, a show that The New York Times art critic Ken Johnson called “near perfect,” Richard Serra: Early Work devotes over three hundred pages to a key five-year period of the artist’s earliest work. Anchored by exquisite black-and-white plates, from installation views of works in situ to documentary photographs, this “impressively realized” publication offers “a blow-by-blow account of Serra’s rapidly expanding art-world presence,” as described in a Bookforum review. Focusing specifically on work the artist produced during the period between 1966 and 1971, this classic tome documents the significance of his early work, with archival texts and reviews, alongside new scholarship by American art critic and historian Hal Foster. Produced in close collaboration with the artist, this monograph aims to reconsider the groundbreaking practices and ideas that so firmly situate Serra in the history of twentieth-century art. Its stunning selection of seminal works illuminates the debut of the artist’s innovative, process-oriented experiments with nontraditional materials, such as vulcanized rubber, neon, and lead, and introduces the interplay of gravity and material—of "verticality and horizontality,” writes Foster—that would remain a fundamental aspect of Serra’s production over the subsequent decades. Also featured in the publication are key early examples of the artist’s work in steel, as well as stills from some of his most important early films.

Biography of Alan Gibbs, one of New Zealand's most influential and controversial businessmen and Aquada amphibious car developer. When Sir Richard Branson drove the Aquada high speed amphibious car across the English Channel it was a watershed moment. At last, had the holy grail of amphibious transport been achieved? The developer of the car, New Zealander Alan Gibbs, has since gone on to unveil a range of amphibious vehicles, including the Quadski, Humdinga and Phibian. Businessman, inventor, merchant banker, philanthropist, art collector, adventurer and inveterate traveller, Gibbs’ life has been far from ordinary. The one-time socialist became a very active participant and free-market champion when New Zealand’s economy was transformed in the mid to late 1980s. These days he is also focussed on developing Gibbs Farm, his remarkable sculpture park on the Kaipara Harbour, in New Zealand. The Farm, which has works by Richard Serra, Bernar Venet, Anish Kapoor, Tony Oursler and Andy Goldsworthy, among others, is of international stature. Gibbs lives in London and has factories in the UK, Detroit and New Zealand. It’s a life, as biographer Paul Goldsmith engagingly conveys, that’s been a lot of serious fun.

The aim of this book is to contribute to a critical assessment of the literature on the creative city and to a clarification of some of the many questions that remain unanswered. It is a collection of essays which, in the first part, addresses concepts and theories of urban development, city marketing and branding, presented as a framework in which the discourse of the creative city is embedded. In the second part, four case studies of cities considered to be emblematic of cultural industries (Manchester, Berlin, Dublin, and a comparative study of Milan and London) serve to illustrate the social production of creativity in specific urban contexts.
