SUBJECT: Jumpmaster Course Student Conduct, Graduation Requirements and Grading Criteria The purpose of this memorandum is to outline the requirements for a student to successfully complete the United States Army Jumpmaster course within the administrative point system and all graded exams. 1. Students attending the Jumpmaster Course must conduct themselves in an appropriate and disciplined manner, on-duty and off-duty. Students who violate provisions of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) will be quickly disciplined, and may be permanently dropped from training with subsequent assignment as a non-graduate. You will receive a briefing from your NCOIC on your conduct while assigned to the Jumpmaster Course. Any violation of the items in the briefing may result in being dropped from the course. 2. Students must meet the following requirements on all exams in order to graduate from the US Army Jumpmaster Course: a. Nomenclature Exam. Student will be presented with 25 items of equipment chosen on a random basis. Student must score a minimum of 70% to receive a “GO”. b. Actions During Decent Exam (pre-jump). Student will be given 30 minutes in which to recite Actions During Decent in its entirety. Student must score a minimum of 70% to receive a “GO”. c. Written Exam. Student will be given one hour to answer 100 questions, to include True/False, Multiple Choice, and Fill-in the Blank. Student must score a minimum of 70% to receive a “GO”. In addition to the tested material, students may lose 16 points on the exam for not following the instructions given during the test brief. d. JMPI Exam. Student will have five minutes in which to JMPI three jumpers, one wearing combat equipment, two hollywood jumpers. Using proper sequence, and proper nomenclature while identifying all deficiencies. Student must score a minimum of 70% to receive a “GO”. e. Practical Work inside the Aircraft (PWAC) Exam. Students will be graded on hand and arm signals, and door check procedures, in an Air Force fixed wing aircraft while in flight. Student must score a minimum of 70% to receive a “GO”. In addition to the tested material, students may lose points on the exam for improper rigging of equipment, or failure to follow instructions. 3. Students will be given one retest for each exam (Nomenclature, Actions During Decent, Written, or PWAC) where they fail to meet the 70% standard. Students must score a minimum of 70% on any retest in order to receive a “GO.” Passing scores on a retest will count towards the student’s grade point average as 70%, regardless of the number of correct or incorrect answers on the exam. Students that fail to achieve the 70% standard on a retest will be dropped from the course. 4. Students who maintain an 80% or higher grade on the Nomenclature, Actions During Decent, PWAC and Written exams will be considered “Re-Entry Qualified.” Re-Entry Qualified students will receive two additional attempts to pass the JMPI test. Students that fail to maintain re-entry status will still receive three attempts on the JMPI test. 5. The use of administrative points will assist the cadre in enforcing standards throughout the course. Students will begin the course with 100 administrative points and my loose re-entry status if accrued administrative points drop below 80%.

As long ago as 1957, U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers were in the Republic of Vietnam. going about their business of training, advising, and assisting members of the Vietnamese Army. Despite the old Army witticism about never volunteering for anything, the Special Forces soldier is. in fan, a double volunteer, having first volunteered for airborne training and then again for Special Forces training. From a very meager beginning but sustained by a strong motivation and confidence in his mission, the Special Forces soldier has marched through the Vietnam struggle in superb fashion. In 1957 some fifty-eight Vietnamese soldiers were given military training by Special Forces troops. Ten years later the Special Forces were advising and assisting over 40,000 paramilitary troops, along with another 40,000 Regional Forces and Popular Forces soldiers. This monograph traces the development and notes the progress, problems. successes, and failures of a unique program undertaken by the U.S. Army for the first lime in its history. It is hoped that all the significant lessons learned have been recorded and the many pitfalls of such a program uncovered. I am responsible for the conclusions reached, yet my thought processes could not escape the influence of the many outstanding officers and men in the Special Forces who joined in the struggle. Particularly, I must lake note of the contributions of the Special Forces noncommissioned officers, without question the most competent soldiers in the world. With the withdrawal of the Special Forces from Vietnam in 1971, the Army could honestly lay claim to a new dimension in ground warfare-the organized employment of a paramilitary force in sustained combat against a determined enemy. I know I speak for my predecessors and successors in claiming that the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) was the finest collection of professional soldiers ever assembled by the U.S. Army, anywhere, anytime. Although hundreds of stilling basins and energy­dissipating devices have been designed in conjunction with spillways, outlet works, and canal structures, it is often necessary to make model studies of individual structures to be certain that these will operate as anticipated. The reason for these repetitive tests is that a factor of uncertainty exists regarding the overall performance characteristics of energy dissipators. The many laboratory studies made on individual structures over a period of years have been made by different personnel, for different groups of designers, each structure having different allowable design limitations. Since no two structures were exactly alike, attempts to generalize the assembled data resulted in sketchy and, at times, inconsistent results having only vague connecting links. Extensive library research into the works of others revealed the fact that the necessary correlation factors are nonexistent. To fill the need for up-to-date hydraulic design information on stilling basins and energy dissipators, a research program on this general subject was begun with a study of the hydraulic jump, observing all phases as it occurs in open channel flow. With a broader understanding of this phenomenon it was then possible to proceed to the more practical aspects of stilling basin design. This monograph generalizes the design of stilling basins, energy dissipators of several kinds and associated appurtenances. General design rules are presented so that the necessary dimensions for a particular structure may be easily and quickly determined, and the selected values checked by others without the need for exceptional judgment or extensive previous experience. Proper use of the material in this monograph will eliminate the need for hydraulic model tests on many individual structures, particularly the smaller ones. Designs of structures obtained by following the recommendations presented here will be conservative in that they will provide a desirable factor of safety. However, model studies will still prove beneficial to reduce structure sizes further, to account for nonsymmetrical conditions of approach or getaway, or to evaluate other unusual conditions not described herein.
