This research note reports on research whose major objectives to determine: 1) how overall identification performance differs between slides of black hot and white thermal vehicle images, and 2) how identification performance is affected by whether the images shown at various ranges are black hot or white hot. The primary conclusions drawn from the data analyses included these: The black hot thermal polarity setting is preferred for target identification by the majority of soldiers who are competent in vehicle recognition and identification using thermal sights. Although an average of absolute differences between performance using black hot and white hot images favored the use of black hot images across all ranges, these results are inconclusive. Further research is suggested. Identification performance using thermal images degrades sharply at intermediate (1300-1700 meter) and far (1800-2300 meter) ranges. "Three training effectiveness experiments were conducted on a computer-based, thermal combat vehicle identification program developed under the auspices of the Product Manager for Forward Looking Infrared. The program included real thermal imagery of vehicles. The first experiment compared part-task training schedules. The second compared a self-paced trial procedure, which incorporated side by side visual corrective feedback, to a timed trial procedure, which gave only knowledge of results feedback. The third examined the effects of training at near versus far ranges. Thermal training substantially improved scores on both thermal and visible images of vehicles that had been trained, but not for other vehicles. long vehicle sets led to learning plateaus; shorter and multiple sets worked better. learning was more efficient and transfer was enhanced when soldiers responded at their own pace and received corrective visual feedback. Soldiers learned to discriminate vehicles at far ranges, although it took them twice as long as soldiers who trained on near imagery. Even with extensive training, some vehicle confusions persisted, indicating great similarity in thermal signatures for some vehicles. The findings were applied to the program. Efforts are continuing to refine it and to field it throughout the Army."--DTIC.

Thermal (IR) sighting systems are used on a variety of weapons systems, such as the M1 Tank, the M2 and M3 Infantry Fighting Vehicle, the TOW, and the improved TOW. However, no standard training program that trained the thermal sight operator to recognize or identify the targets with these sights existed. A vehicle recognition and identification training program utilizing simulated thermal images was developed and tested. The Basic Thermal Combat Vehicle Identification (RCVI) Training Program was designed to be compatible with the Army's Combat Identification (CVI) Training Program (GTA 17-2-9), through use of the same 30 vehicles and training format. The TCVI training was evaluated in the 8th Infantry Division, Germany, where 123 soldiers were pretested, trained, and posttested. Performance was measured by the correct number of vehicle recognition and identification responses. A significant performance change was obtained when a comparison of pretest and posttest scores was made.

The Army's Combat Vehicle Identification (CVI) Training Program (GTA 17-2-9) uses a 35mm slide system. Utilization of the Bessler Cue/See and Videotape as additional media on which to present CVI raised the issue of the extent to which these systems could affect image quality with a commensurate reduction of training effectiveness. To evaluate the effects of image quality differences among the 35mm, Bessler, and videotape systems, 105 soldiers were pretested, trained on the three media, each of which used the CVI Training Program. Performance was measured by the correct number of vehicle recognition and identification responses. Comparisons of performance scores across the three media were not significantly different. It was concluded that the image quality of all three of the media was satisfactory for use with the CVI Training Program. No conclusions were drawn regarding the relative overall value of the three systems as training devices. Keywords: Vehicle Recognition; Vehicle Identification; Bessler; Video; Media Evaluation.
