Excerpt from Tales of the Pathfinders There also lived in England at this stirring time, a young man named Robert Macham, who in some way became acquainted with fair Anne and naturally fell in love with her. Men in high station seem to have had but two occupations in those gay days; going to the wars when there were wars, and paying delicate attentions to fair women in days of peace. As there happened to be war somewhere most of the time, there was generally enough fighting to be done. It hap pened that Robert, though deserving Anne's love which she gave him with all her heart, was not of a high and aristocratic family, and her friends deter mined that the two should never marry. They arrested poor Robert, and put him in prison, whence he escaped, and not willing to give up his fair Anne without another effort, fol lowed her to Bristol, whither she had been carried, and there managed to gain opportunities to see her. Excerpt from Tales of a Pathfinder The story of the highways is the story of mankind, whether in a state of barbarism or of civilization. The movement of primitive peoples has been by waterways and land-routes which, following lines of least resistance, often appropriated the trails made by wild animals. The movements of civilized men likewise followed the least resistive lines with the result that the great railways and the National highways coincide with the game-trails and the Indian paths of long ago. The ascent of man has been in direct ratio to the progress that has been made in the speed, safety, comfort and convenience of the movement of men and goods from one place to another. The wheel is the emblem of human progress. The supreme evolution of the wheel is the automobile. Already six and a half million automobiles are daily employed In speeding a third of the population of the United States along their way with the demand increasing so rapidly that the factories are unable to meet it. Every Intelligent citizen in the United States knows that the next big job for America now that the war is over is to construct road beds as perfectly adapted to the economic operation thereon of motor vehicles as the road bed of the railway is adapted to the use thereon of its rolling stock. Excerpt from The Leather-Stocking Tales, Vol. 3: The Pathfinder Ontario, in our own times, has been the scene of important naval evolutions. Fleets have manmuvred on those waters, which, half a century since. Were desert wastes; and the day is not distant, when the whole of that vast range of lakes will become the seat of empire, and fraught with all the interests of human society. A passing glimpse, even though it be in a work of fiction, of what that vast region so lately was, may help to make up the sum of knowledge by which alone a just appreciation can be] formed of the wonderful means by which Providence is clearing the way for the-advancementgfbivilizatiofl across the whole American continent. Excerpt from The Story of a Pathfinder Lady mary: It is many years since I left that delightful reporting world about which you are so curious. But it is still vivid in my memory. I will try to give you a glimpse of that time of pioneering in letters, when the great dailies and the art of shorthand and the arts of the news paper men were still young in America. Excerpt from The Adventures of Pathfinder The scene that they were gazing at was very beauti ful. They could look from their height over an ocean of leaves, glorious and rich, belonging to the elm with its graceful and sweeping top, to the oak, and to the broad-leaved linden. This rich carpet stretched away toward the setting sun until it bounded the horizon by blending with the clouds. Here and there an opening allowed the birch, the quivering aspen, and the nut trees to be seen. Here and there, too, the tall, straight trunk of the pine rose high above the plain of leaves. Excerpt from The Pathfinder The plan of this tale suggested itself to the writer many years since, though the details are altogether of recent invention. The idea of associating seamen and savages in incidents that might be supposed characteristic of the Great Lakes having been mentioned to a publisher, the latter obtained something like a pledge from the author to carry out the design at some future day, which pledge is now tardily and imperfectly redeemed. The reader may recognize an old friends under new circumstances in the principal character of this legend. If the exhibition made of this old acquaintance, in the novel circumstances in which he now appears, should be found not to lessen his favor with the public, it will be a source of extreme gratification to the writer, since he has a interest in the individual in question that falls little short of reality. It is not an easy task, however, to introduce the same character in four separate works, and to maintain the peculiarities that are indispensable to identity, without incurring a risk of fatiguing the reader with sameness; and the present experiment has been so long delayed quite as much from doubts of its success as from any other cause. In this, as in every other undertaking, it must e the "end" that will "crown the work." The Indian character has so little variety, that it has been my object to avoid dwelling on it too much on the present occasion; its association with the sailor, too, it is feared, will be found to have more novelty than interest. Excerpt from Livingstone: The Pathfinder He saw another picture of other people sitting round a fire. These were his young brothers and his Sisters, with himself - a raw, loose-limbed, mill boy - all sitting round the hearth at home in Scot land listening with wide-open eyes to their shaggy haired grandfather, as with flashing eyes he told stories, strangely like these African tales; stories of the wild, fighting Highlanders, and the brave suf ferings Of the Old Scottish covenanting heroes.
