Excerpt from Tales of Irish Life The following Tales, with others, were written many years ago, before I became a resident of Hongkong, and when I had more leisure to devote to literary pursuits than I have since had; they were all, however, written more or less hurriedly in fact, during intervals between the hours of professional duty, usually devoted to exercise and relaxation. All of them, save The Story of an Orange Lodge, appeared from time to time in periodicals of the day. The story named was published in a separate volume in 1864; my object in writing it being, to decry the Orange Confederation, which I then thought, and still consider, a senseless and mischievous organization, alike disgraceful to its members as to Ireland. Conscious as I am of all their faults and 1mper fections, I have reproduced some of these tales in this volume, for private circulation only: they serve to recall younger and happier days, and should their perusal afford the reader a small share of the pleasure their production has given me, I shall be well repaid for my trouble. Excerpt from The Emigrants: A Tale of Irish Life Having written the work which follows, for the purpose of exhibiting, I trust without any offensive prejudice, the circumstances that in general occasion the unparalleled tide of emigration which has drained, and is still draining, this unhappy country of its best blood and strength, I find it very difficult to add anything further upon the subject in the shape of a preface. As there probably may be many persons, however, who will expect from this book more political details upon the subject of Emigration than I have deemed it my business as a novelis to enter into, I think it necessary in the very outset to undeceive them, and to state that, if they open its pages with such a hope or such a fear, they will most assuredly be disappointed. The work is not, therefore, a political one, nor encumbered with anything like a superabundance of mere political reflections. So far from that, I have only introduced such short and plain statements affecting the condition of our people, and pointing out the many causes which have produced it, as were in point of fact necessary to elucidate the motives of action which I have ascribed to some of my characters. I have not presumed to dictate to the legislator nor to make suggestions to the mere politician. My humble task has been to lay open, with an honest and firm hand, many of those evils which press upon the most industrious classes of my brethren the people; and, having done this in a spirit that is not calculated to exasperate but to instruct, I consider my task accomplished. It is for the legislator and the politician to read and draw the obvious inference if they think I am right - and, if they think I am wrong, to pause a little and examine closely whether the error be in their own judgment or mine - in their own prejudices or in my facts. Excerpt from Handy Andy: A Tale of Irish Life A few short papers, under the title of this little venture, appeared, at intervals, in Bentley's Miscellany. Frequent inquiries have' been 'made Why Handy Andy was not continued? And, indeed, I myself regretted the abandonment of what I thought a fruitful subject for fun and whimsicality, though, from various causes, needless to particularise here, the papers were discontinued still, from time to time, recurred the question Why Handy Andy Was not continued 'q and the frequency of the demand has produced the supply. Excerpt from Carleton's Stories of Irish Life I have written many works on Irish life, and up to the present day the man has never lived who could lay his finger on any passage of my writings, and say, That is false.' Truth is something more than a verbal or factual accuracy, and it is never his accuracy that is in question. In reading through the mass of his many works on Irish life, the bewilderment lies, not in any falsity (his knowledge was too intimate for that), but in the changing standpoints from which he told his truth, in his progress round the many possible stand points, and the curious aspect the standpoint of to-day suddenly came to wear when viewed from the standpoint of to-morrow. Excerpt from Irish Life Humour in Anecdote and Story A very cordial reception was given to Irish Life and Humour in Anecdote and Story on its appearance two years ago. Favourable press notices were seconded by the rapid disposal of a large edition. The suggestion was frequently made that while it would be well to reprint the original work as a book for the library, it would be a good thing if an abridge ment were prepared and issued at a popular price. It was felt that such a book would appeal to the traveller and holiday maker. Acting on that suggestion, the author has condensed the original bulky volume into the present publication. He has endeavoured to preserve the best stories of Irish wit and humour which his collection contained, and readers will find that though the following pages fall short of his original work in quantity they do not suffer in quality. In his selection of stories, the author has endeavoured, as far as possible, to illustrate the main features of Irish character. As a general rule he has given the anecdotes exactly as he found them - without comment or observation - leavin g them to speak for themselves. It is his hope that the volume will afford pleasure to Irishmen at home and abroad, and to many others who have not had the privilege of birth in the Land of the Shamrock.
