There were no collisions among them, no disputes during that period 5 all were in perfect accord. In some mysterious fashion, however, each indi vidual was changing imperceptibly 5 an internal movement was going on. At last, a time came when the differences were sufficient to cause conflict, except in the case of a group to be mentioned hereafter, and struggles began. Excerpt from Tales of Irish Life The following Tales, with others, were written many years ago, before I became a resident of Hongkong, and when I had more leisure to devote to literary pursuits than I have since had; they were all, however, written more or less hurriedly in fact, during intervals between the hours of professional duty, usually devoted to exercise and relaxation. All of them, save The Story of an Orange Lodge, appeared from time to time in periodicals of the day. The story named was published in a separate volume in 1864; my object in writing it being, to decry the Orange Confederation, which I then thought, and still consider, a senseless and mischievous organization, alike disgraceful to its members as to Ireland. Conscious as I am of all their faults and 1mper fections, I have reproduced some of these tales in this volume, for private circulation only: they serve to recall younger and happier days, and should their perusal afford the reader a small share of the pleasure their production has given me, I shall be well repaid for my trouble. Excerpt from Tales From Irish History The children Of Usnach dwelt with King Cormac in his great palace Of Emania, where assembled warriors famed in annals of war, and poets who chanted their exploits, and musicians who accompanied the lays of the poets on the harp. The king's room was in the front of the house, and was long enough for thirty warriors. It was ornamented with silver and bronze, and carbuncles and precious stones, so that day and night were equally light therein. A gong Of silver hung behind the king, suspended from the roof-tree, and when he struck it with his silver wand with three silver apples, all the men of Ulster were silent. Excerpt from Tales and Stories of Ireland Carnmore was one of those small villages that are to be found in the outskirts of many parishes in Ireland, whose distinct boundaries are lost in the contiguous mountain-wastes. This was situated at the foot of a deep gorge or pass, overhung by two bleak hills, from the naked sides of which the storm swept over it, without discomposing the peaceful little nook of cabins that stood below. About a furlong farther down were two or three farm-houses, inhabited by a family named Cassidy -men of simple, inoffensive manners, and cousi derable wealth. They were, however, acute and wise in their generation - intelligent cattle-dealers, on whom it would have been a matter of some difficulty to impose an unsound horse, or a cow older than was intimated by her horn-rings, even.
