Discrete mathematics is a branch in mathematics that involves discrete elements and uses both algebra and arithmetic. It is being used in computer science and mathematics. It can be used to improve reasoning and problem-solving abilities. Discrete mathematics refers to the study of mathematical structures which are fundamentally distinct from continuous. Contrary to real numbers, which have the property of changing "smoothly", objects in discrete mathematics, such as integers and graphs, do not change smoothly but have distinct, separate values. Topics in "continuous mathematics", such as calculus and Euclidean geometry, are excluded from discrete mathematics. Integers can often be used to enumerate discrete objects. Formally, discrete mathematics is a branch of mathematics that deals with countable sets (finite or sets with the same cardinality than the natural numbers). There is no precise definition of "discrete mathematics" however. CATEGORIES FOR MATHEMATICS Two categories can be used to describe mathematics: Continuous Mathematics It is based on continuous number lines or real numbers. It is defined by the fact that there is almost always an infinite number of numbers between any two numbers. A function in continuous mathematics, for example, can be plotted as a smooth curve with no breaks. Discrete Mathematics It has distinct values, i.e. There are always more than one point between two points. If we have a finite number of objects, for example, the function can be described as a list or ordered pairs that contain these objects. This can then be presented as a complete listing of those pairs. G. Cantor, a German mathematician, introduced the concept set. A set is a group of distinct and definite objects that are selected according to certain rules or descriptions. The basis for many other areas of study, such as relations, counting theory, graph theory, and finite state machines, is set theory. This chapter will discuss the various aspects of Set Theory. A set is an unsorted collection of elements. You can list the elements of a set explicitly using the set bracket. It does not affect the set if the order of elements is altered or any element is repeated.
