Excerpt from Tables and Notes on Human Osteology, for the Use of Students of Medicine To the quiz compend I, in common with the the vast majority of teachers in medical colleges, have strenuously objected. The student, with that propensity to cramming that seems the natural outgrowth of our American system of teaching, will seize any means of acquiring speedily and with little effort, such elementary instruction as will enable him to pass his examinations. The greater object that lies in the background, the intelligent practice of the medical art, is altogether forgotten. The result, to an examiner who seeks for something more than parrot-like answers to elementary questions, is disappointing. Men who really possess brains and are capable of rational thought come up, and one after the other rehearse their little lessons, with all the glaring absurdities of the compend, and the densest ignorance of the subjects treated. Nevertheless, the quiz compend is a mistaken remedy for a genuine evil. The curriculum of an American medical college of the better class is too full to permit detailed reading in the text-books during the lecture term. After eight to twelve hours in the lecture rooms and laboratories, the student ought not to read over the subject-matter of the day.
