Top researchers in optimization and control from around the world gathered in Detroit for the 18th annual IFIP TC7 Conference on Systems Modelling and Optimization held in July 1997. The papers offered in this volume were selected from among the 250 plenary, invited, and contributed works presented at the conference. The editors chose these papers to represent the myriad and diverse range of topics within the field -in theory and applications-and to disseminate important new results. The editors have organized the book into seven sections: Distributed Parameter Systems Modelling Optimal Control and Nonsmoooth Analysis Automotive Optimization and Operations Research Applications · Reliability Each section contains important advances in theoretical development of optimization and control, new results, and discussions of applications. Treatment of numerous and wide- ranging applications-from turbulent flows, European option pricing, and storage location, to wear processes, passive fire protection, and robotics-make this resource important for academic and industrial researchers working in a variety of areas in systems engineering and applied mathematics.

This constitutes the Proceedings of the 22nd IFIP TC7 Conference held in July 2005, in Torino, Italy, and dedicated to Camillo Possio, on the 60th anniversary of his death during the last air raid over Torino. The papers in this volume concern primarily stochastic and distributed systems, their control/optimization, and inverse problems. These proceedings also explore applications of optimization techniques and computational methods in fields such as medicine, biology and economics.

For 60 years the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) has been advancing research in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This book looks into both past experiences and future perspectives using the core of IFIP's competence, its Technical Committees (TCs) and Working Groups (WGs). Soon after IFIP was founded, it established TCs and related WGs to foster the exchange and development of the scientific and technical aspects of information processing. IFIP TCs are as diverse as the different aspects of information processing, but they share the following aims: To establish and maintain liaison with national and international organizations with allied interests and to foster cooperative action, collaborative research, and information exchange. To identify subjects and priorities for research, to stimulate theoretical work on fundamental issues, and to foster fundamental research which will underpin future development. To provide a forum for professionals with a view to promoting the study, collection, exchange, and dissemination of ideas, information, and research findings and thereby to promote the state of the art. To seek and use the most effective ways of disseminating information about IFIP’s work including the organization of conferences, workshops and symposia and the timely production of relevant publications. To have special regard for the needs of developing countries and to seek practicable ways of working with them. To encourage communication and to promote interaction between users, practitioners, and researchers. To foster interdisciplinary work and – in particular – to collaborate with other Technical Committees and Working Groups. The 17 contributions in this book describe the scientific, technical, and further work in TCs and WGs and in many cases also assess the future consequences of the work’s results. These contributions explore the developments of IFIP and the ICT profession now and over the next 60 years. The contributions are arranged per TC and conclude with the chapter on the IFIP code of ethics and conduct.

Proceedings volume contains carefully selected papers presented during the 17th IFIP Conference on System Modelling and Optimization. Optimization theory and practice, optimal control, system modelling, stochastic optimization, and technical and non-technical applications of the existing theory are among areas mostly addressed in the included papers. Main directions are treated in addition to several survey papers based on invited presentations of leading specialists in the respective fields. Publication provides state-of-the-art in the area of system theory and optimization and points out several new areas (e.g fuzzy set, neural nets), where classical optimization topics intersects with computer science methodology.

The relentless flood of data has given rise to a pressing concern: the widespread issue of misinformation. In an era where being well-informed is vital, the consequences of inaccurate information can be dire and wide-spread, impacting not only individuals but entire societies. The critical need for reliable, accurate, and high-quality information is more pronounced than ever, and the risk of being misled by this information has reached unprecedented levels. Quantitative Measures and Warranty Coverage of the Risk of Misinforming offers an extensive exploration of the origins, risks, and contributing factors of deception, presenting these together in the form of an invaluable resource for scholars and academics seeking a solution to this pressing issue. The book’s comprehensive examination of misinforming identifies the challenges and provides practical strategies and techniques to address and mitigate these risks. By delving into the depths of misinforming, this book equips readers with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate the information maze of the digital age, ensuring that they can make informed, accurate, and impactful decisions in an era dominated by data.
