Excerpt from Syphilis and Public Health The importance of this subject cannot be too highly emphasized. Syphilis is one of the most prevalent of all infectious diseases, causes an incalculable amount of suffering and economic loss, and because it has so far eluded sanitary control is a constant menace not only to the licentious but to the clean-living public as well. Because of the secrecy which has always shrouded the disease we do not know and perhaps never shall know the exact incidence of syphilis, but sufficient is known with regard to its prevalence to justify the above statement. For several years past syphilis has been made a reportable disease by the city of New York. During the fourteen weeks from July 4 to October 3, 1914, infectious and contagious dis eases were reported. Of these, syphilis stood first on the list, with 6432 cases, or 28 per cent.; tuberculosis second, with 5525 cases, or 21 per cent. Diphtheria third, with 3370 cases, or 13 per cent.; measles fourth, with 2750 cases, or 11 per cent.; scarlet fever fifth, with 1064 cases, or 4 per cent. From this and many other statistics which will be quoted later it would appear that with the exception of gonorrhea syphilis is the most prevalent of all serious infectious diseases. Excerpt from Syphilis In preparing this volume for the profession it has been the aim of the author to present the subject of syphilis in as practical a manner as possible. For this reason a considerable portion of the work is devoted to diagnosis and treatment. The chapter on laboratory diagnosis is made especially full, as today the desirability, in fact the necessity, of laboratory aid is more evident for the successful treatment of syphilis than for any other disease. Matters of theoretical and historical interest, of course, are discussed, but usually only when they have some bearing upon the practical handling of the subject. The author has drawn freely from the literature of syphilis at his command for his material and has added his personal views and experiences. In all instances, when possible, he has given credit to those authors whose work he has cited. During the three years which have elapsed since the appearance of the first edition the author has been particularly impressed with the importance of visceral syphilis. For that reason he has attempted to review the literature and has practically rewritten the sections dealing with this subject. Certain other sections, for example, that on the syphilodermata, have been somewhat amplified. The literature on syphilis which has been published during the time since the appearance of the first edition has been thoroughly reviewed and all new material of importance added. Excerpt from Syphilis: And Other Venereal Diseases IN this country medical men display some diffidence in publishing works on venereal diseases, and the tone of most books on the subject in English is almost apologetic. I could never quite understand the reason of this, as I have always considered it the duty of the surgeon to regard venereal maladies from the scientific and medical point of view, and from that of a medical man endeavouring to treat diseases the ultimate results of which may in uence in such a marked manner the future health of the individual. For these reasons I have thought it well in my writings to exclude the moral and religious side of the question, which scarcely comes within the province of the profession of medicine. Again, surgeons often appear to think venereal lesions on the genitals in hospital cases altogether beneath their notice, quite forgetting the importance to the patient of a correct diagnosis, and also the difficulties they are preparing for themselves when brought face to face with the same diseases in private practice. For my own part, I have always been of opinion that the most insignificant venereal lesion is instructive and worthy of study. While doing this, we have endeavoured to include in the new edition the pith of what seemed to be most valuable among the vast quantity of literature that has appeared on this subject during the last thirteen years. It has thus become necessary to add a large amount of new matter, with the unavoidable result of adding very considerably to the size of the volume.
