Thianthrene-2,7- and -2,8-dicarboxylic acids plus a synthetic intermediate, 4,4'-thiobis(3-chlorobenzoic acid), have been synthesized in good yields via nucleophilic aromatic substitution of Na2S on N, N-dimethyl-3,4- dichlorobenzamide. New aromatic polyamides having inherent viscosities of 1.29 to 2.39 dL/g were prepared by the direct polycondensation reaction of the dicarboxylic acids with 4,4'-oxydianiline and 1,4-phenylenediamine in N-methyl- 2-pyrrolidinone using triphenyl phosphite and pyridine. The fused-ring thianthrene-based polyamides were more soluble than analogous poly(thioether amide)s. Polymer films were cast from either DMF or DMAc/LiCl solutions and analyzed by FTIR and NMR. All prepared aramids displayed good thermal stability by DSC and TGA.

Phosphorus containing polyamides and copolyamides were prepared from 1-(dialkoxyphosphinyl)methyl-2,4- and -2,6-diaminobenzenes. The polymers produced were characterized by infrared and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. Their thermal properties were compared with those of the corresponding common polyamides. In addition, by determining the limiting oxygen index value of some of these polyamides, their fire resistance was evaluated. Mikroyannidis, J. A. and Kourtides, D. A. The nylon 13,6 was successfully synthesized and its chemical composition, thermal properties, crystal structure, and moisture absorption characterized. Melting temperature and glass transition temperature were determined to be 206 °C and 60 °C, respectively, while the equilibrium melting temperature was determined to be 248 °C. Characterization of the crystallization kinetics showed that nylon 13,6 exhibits very fast crystallization compared to the industrially important nylons, nylon 6 and nylon 6,6. Additionally, the moisture absorption of nylon 13,6 was dramatically lower than nylon 6 and nylon 6,6 which is consistent with the much lower amide content of nylon 13,6. The crystal structure was determined to be different from the expected [gamma]-form, which possess a pseudohexagonal unit cell. Instead, the x-ray scattering pattern was more similar to the [alpha]-form. Furthermore, a similar result has been obtained for other odd-even nylons including nylon 5,6, nylon 5,10, nylon 9,2, nylon 11,10, and nylon 11,12.
