The synthesis and characterization of new aromatic dichloride monomers containing benzoyl and phenylsulfonyl pendant groups and the corresponding polymers made via Ni(O)-catalyzed coupling polymerization are described. This work is an outgrowth of the previously described synthesis of poly(benzoyl-1,4-phenylene) from the Ni(O)-catalyzed coupling polymerization of 2,5-dichlorobenzophenone. The new monomers containing benzoyl pendant groups were synthesized by the Friedel-Crafts reaction of 2,5-dichlorobenzoyl chloride and substituted benzenes to give structures that were substituted at the para position on the pendant benzene ring. The substituents include fluorine, methyl, ethyl, and isopropyl.
