This book constructs an idealized version of what the author calls syntacticism, a school of thought in the philosophy of logic which is congenial to analytical philosophy, logical positivism, and anti-metaphysical nominalism. It examines in detail both technical metalogical and broad philosophic issues associated with this way of thinking about logic, and specifically addresses anomalies around symbolic expressivity, which is crucial for this approach, with a view to provide both a deeper understanding and a critique. The range of fields and interests addressed include: the philosophy of logic, formal logic and mathematical logic, the analytical school of philosophy, logical positivism and nominalism, parallels between thinking about logic and the formalist school in the philosophy of mathematics, the history of modern logic, Wittgenstein’s Tractatus, Leśniewski’s protothetic, dialogue logic, and combinatorial logic.

We prove normal form theorems of a complete axiom system for the inference of functional dependencies and independencies in relational databases. We also show that all proofs in our system have a normal form where the application of independency rules is limited to three levels. Our normal form results in a faster proof search engine in deriving consequences of functional independencies. As a result, we get a new construction of an Armstrong relation for a given set of functional dependencies. It is also shown that an Armstrong relation for a set of functional dependencies and independencies do not exist in general, and this generalizes the same result valid under the closed world assumption.

Mukherjee (affiliation not cited) presents a model of prosody-syntax interactions, drawing upon a number of linguistic concepts which have been developed to analyze the interrelationship of intonation and syntax. Mukherjee begins by discussing the concept of talk unit from a corpus linguistic and neurobiological perspective. The chapters that follow cover topics such as the procedure of parasyntactic corpus annotation, parasyntactic variations, and the information structural potential of parasyntactic presentation structures. The study uses Halford's 1996 model of talk units as its framework, as well as other theoretical approaches. c. Book News Inc.

This is the first exhaustive investigation of gradience in syntax, conceived of as grammatical indeterminacy. It looks at gradience in English word classes, phrases, clauses and constructions, and examines how it may be defined and differentiated. Bas Aarts draws on, and reviews, work in psychology, philosophy and language from Aristotle to Chomsky, and writes clearly on a fascinating and important aspect of language and cognition.

This volume is devoted to the main areas of mathematical logic and applications to computer science. There are articles on weakly o-minimal theories, algorithmic complexity of relations, models within the computable model theory, hierarchies of randomness tests, computable numberings, and complexity problems of minimal unsatisfiable formulas. The problems of characterization of the deduction-detachment theorem, ?1-induction, completeness of Le?niewski's systems, and reduction calculus for the satisfiability problem are also discussed. The coverage includes the answer to Kanovei's question about the upper bound for the complexity of equivalence relations by convergence at infinity for continuous functions. The volume also gives some applications to computer science such as solving the problems of inductive interference of languages from the full collection of positive examples and some negative data, the effects of random negative data, methods of formal specification and verification on the basis of model theory and multiple-valued logics, interval fuzzy algebraic systems, the problems of information exchange among agents on the base topological structures, and the predictions provided by inductive theories.

This volume in the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series contains 98 papers presented at the S+SSPR 2008 workshops. S+SSPR 2008 was the sixth time that the SPR and SSPR workshops organized by Technical Committees, TC1 and TC2, of the International Association for Pattern Rec- nition (IAPR) wereheld as joint workshops. S+SSPR 2008was held in Orlando, Florida, the family entertainment capital of the world, on the beautiful campus of the University of Central Florida, one of the up and coming metropolitan universities in the USA. S+SSPR 2008 was held during December 4–6, 2008 only a few days before the 19th International Conference on Pattern Recog- tion(ICPR2008),whichwasheldin Tampa, onlytwo hoursawayfromOrlando, thus giving the opportunity of both conferences to attendees to enjoy the many attractions o?ered by two neighboring cities in the state of Florida. SPR 2008 and SSPR 2008 received a total of 175 paper submissions from many di?erent countries around the world, thus giving the workshop an int- national clout, as was the case for past workshops. This volume contains 98 accepted papers: 56 for oral presentations and 42 for poster presentations. In addition to parallel oral sessions for SPR and SSPR, there was also one joint oral session with papers of interest to both the SPR and SSPR communities. A recent trend that has emerged in the pattern recognition and machine lea- ing research communities is the study of graph-based methods that integrate statistical andstructural approaches.
