ENT diseases represent a very significant percentage of the cases day-to-day clinic general practitioner (GP). Unfortunately, the educational curriculum of the Medical Schools and Family Doctor/GP training program does not parallel the high prevalence of ENT diseases. As a result, GPs may refer to Secondary Care many patients with ENT problems when they could handle them in Primary Care. It is legitimate to assume that a better understanding of the clinical history, clinical examination and accurate management of ENT diseases, might lead if not to a reduction in the number of specialist visits requested by GPs, to a better management of the ENT patient. This book is not a complete compendium of Otolaryngology, which would not be useful to a GP. Instead, it wants to be a practical guide for the Primary Care provider. The topics covered are common and the ENT diseases management is the one you would expect to take place in a Primary Care setting. The use of ENT diagnostic instrumentation refers to what should be available in any GP Surgery. I think this book is a useful addition to the library of medical students, GPs in training and Board Certified Family Physicians. Its format is simple and the text is minimal. The topics are organized in such a way as to highlight when a patient should be sent to a specialist immediately, efficiently managed in General practice, and when a management program can be started by the GP.

This volume serves as a practical guide for the primary care provider to better understand the clinical history, clinical examination, and accurate management of ENT disease. Additionally, the text aims to help general physicians and nurse practitioners to reduce the number of specialist referrals for patients requiring ENT care. Topics cover the most common ENT symptoms that can expect to be managed in a primary care setting, ENT diagnostic instrumentation for surgery, and how to determine when a patient can be managed in a general practice or referred to secondary care. Other topics cover the history of ENT, common red flags, rhinology, and laryngology. ENT in Primary Care: A Concise Guide will be a useful resource for medical students, general physicians in training, board certified physicians, and nurse practitioners treating ENT patients.

Covering the full-range of disorders, this is the first book to help primary care physicians diagnose and treat ear, nose, and throat problems. With 60% of patients seen by primary care physician presenting with ENT disorders, the need for the book is clear. It is easy-to-read, concise, and is uniquely symptom-based rather than disease-based, recognizing that patients will not present the primary care physician with any diagnoses. This book will guide the physician as to how to make the diagnosis, what other tests to order, how to decide on treatment, and what the warning signs are for referral to a specialist. Each chapter is based on a symptom and has algorithms for quick reference, as well as explanations on each step of the algorithm. The treatment is also outlined in an algorithmic fashion as well as detailed in the text. The book is eminently suitable for primary care physicians and emergency room or urgent care personnel, resident physicians in primary care fields, medical students and admirably serves those studying for the Boards, as well as allied health professionals, including ENT nurses and audiologists.

ENT Made Easy is the ideal clinical text for family physicians, physician assistants, ENT trainees, medical students, and other healthcare professionals looking to manage common ENT conditions. Diseases of the ears, nose and throat are among the most common presentations in primary care, and many patients are referred to ENT clinics in secondary care for further medical and surgical management. To help reduce these referrals this book guides readers through the basic anatomy and pathophysiology and then, for each presentation, provides: an introduction which describes possible causes and the history required a section on diagnosis, including which examinations and investigations to consider management options, complications to look out for, and when to refer. This book offers concise, practical guidance and so helps to fill the gap between ENT theory and the actual work experience. In addition to covering the common presentations, from allergic rhinitis to vertigo, via dysphagia and halitosis, the book also provides a description of the main investigations and covers the particular problems occurring in pediatric cases. Publisher's note: this version of ENT Made Easy is an adaptation of the book of the same name by Amtul Salam Sami (ISBN 9781911510055) and is specifically intended for the US market. Not available in the UK/Europe.
