The Solvent Extraction of Metal Chelates is a comprehensive account of the solvent extraction (liquid-liquid extraction) of metal chelate complexes. Topics covered include the composition and stability of metal chelates; analytical applications of the solvent extraction of metal chelates; and selective extraction procedures for metals. A theoretical treatment of the solvent extraction of metal chelates is also given. This book is comprised of six chapters and begins with an overview of solvent extraction and how it can be used to solve important theoretical problems concerning the composition and stability of soluble and insoluble metal complexes. The next chapter examines the composition and stability of metal chelates based on the assumption that only uncharged complexes are dissolved and extracted by the organic solvents. A theory of the solvent extraction of metal chelates is then described, paying particular attention to a variety of factors that influence the extraction of metal chelates, including acidity, solubility and instability of the metal chelate, and organic solvent. Some analytical applications of the solvent extraction of metal chelates are also considered. The last two chapters deal with systems and selective extraction procedures for metals. Solvent extraction is the most common chemical technique used in hydrometallurgical separations and purification of transition metals and f-elements. Solvent extraction of metallic cations, such as the f-elements, needs the use of organic ligands (extractants) to coordinate the targeted cation, to make it soluble in an organic phase and then allow the phase transfer from the aqueous phase to the organic one. The family of acidic di-alkyl organophosphorus extractants are the extractants of choice for trivalent metals. Furthermore, the large catalogue of diluents available for experimentation is one of the delightful aspects of solvent extraction chemistry (and probably to other chemistry domains). There are so many to choose from, and each has its special applications where it outshines the rest. This dissertation is focusing on the influence of the choice of the diluent on the solvent extraction process of selected trivalent f-elements (Nd3+, Eu3+, Tm3+ and Am 3+) by HEH[EHP]. The results show that the diluent influences the efficiency of the extraction (characterized by the Kex), but also the stoichiometry of the metal chelate. Spectrophotometry shows that the coordination of the metal chelate is invariant from one diluent to another. The results of the extraction of Eu3+ by HEH[EHP] are then compared to the diluent properties that are relevant for the solvation process (cavitation, dispersion and association). Finally, van't Hoff analysis is applied to the extraction of Am3+ and Nd3+ by HDEHP in various diluents, reveling an entropy and enthalpy compensation effect.

Aliphatic carboxlic acid amides were found to cause synergistic shifts in the pH50 values for the extraction of trivalnet rare-earth metlas form chloride media by solutions of alkylsalicyclic acids in xylene. Fro the different types of amide examined, the synergistic shifts for the extraction of neodymium by 3,5-diisopropylsalicyclic acid (DIPSA) generally decrease in the order : R.CO.NR'2 > R.CO.NHR' > R.CO.NH2, where R and R' alkyl groups. With the N,N-dialkyl amides (R.CO.NR2') and the N-alkyl amides (R.CO.NHR'), the extent of the synergistic effect decreases with increasing chain-branching in either of the alkyl groups R and R'. Fro additions to 0.25 M alkylsalicyclic acid, the syngergistic effect increases with concentrations of up to 0.1 M amide, and decrease with higher concentrations. The extent of the synergistic shift produced by a given amide, as well as the separation in pH50 values form lanthanum to lutetium, increase with increasing steric bulk of the alkylsalicyclic acid used. The separations between adjacent lanthanides are too small to be any practical interest, however. Measurement of the solubility of salicyclic acids (LA) in xylene containing various amounts of N,N-dialkyl amide (L) indicate that essentially complete formation of the HA.L adduct takes place. Treatment of metal-distribution data by slope analysis, and measurement of the solubility of the neodymium-DIPSA complx in xylene in the presence of amide suggest that the mixed-ligand complex has the stiochiometry NdA3L2.

The solvent extraction properties of 1,1,1-trifluoro-2,4-pentanedione (H(tfa)), 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione (H(hfa)), 1,1,1,2,2,6,6,6-octafluoro-3,5-hexanedione (H(ofhd)), 1,1,1,2,2,3,3,7,7,7-decafluoro-4,6-heptanedione (H(dfhd)), and 1,1,1,2,2,3,3-heptafluoro-7,7-dimethyl-4,6-octanedione (H(fod)) are described. Distribution ratio-pH curves or percent extracted-pH curves are presented for the extraction of copper, iron, beryllium, cobalt, zinc or other metal ions employing chloroform or benzene solutions of each ligand, and for the effective extraction of divalent and trivalent metals with butanol-H(tfa). Marked enhancement of extraction efficiency of divalent metal ions into chloroform or benzene via isobutylamine adduct formation is also described for most systems. The effect of increasing fluorocarbon chain length resulting in increasing ability to extract the divalent metals zinc and cobalt into chloroform or benzene without the aid of adduct formation is discussed, and extraction systems with the optimum ligand, H(dfhd), are characterized. Syntheses of H(dfhd), H(ofhd), and other ligands are reported, and the physical properties of these and various other fluorine-containing beta-diketones and certain toxicity studies are reviewed. Preliminary work on the direct reaction of ligands with metals in hydrocarbons is presented. (Author).
