It's a story of a professional gardener's son, living quite comfortably up until the time of England's general strike. The duration of one year was just too much for the average family, which left my parents practically penniless. When the strike started in late November 1926, it also put my father on the dole. The impossible task - which was beyond his capabilities - created the loss of his job. He was told of additional duties he was to perform, and he refused. The labours of a gardener to provide for 300 plus is a full-time job in itself, but the addition of being a chauffeur upon demand and to be a waiter at the evening dinner table was far more than anybody should be asked to do. Christmas 1927 we were poor, with hardships occuring during the ensuing years before the war. In 1939 the war appeared imminent, so I became a part of the RAF reserve as a storekeeper, and shortly afterwards was mobilized on September 2, 1939. Such episodes as the Brize Norton Bombing are detailed, along with other events which transpired. After I was posted to a mobile squadron #242 Hurricane, we were shipped to an unknown destination. We became part of the allied force in the Dutch East Indies, followed by the Dutch Capitulation, to become prisoners of war to the Japanese, which led to attrocities in four labour camps, then into Fukuoka #2 Nagasaki. Slavery greatly reduced our anatomies to skeletons, myself to 84 lbs. Of all the red cross parcels shipped to us, we saw very little of their contents. The "A" Bomb or "Fat Boy" was our salvation. It saved invasion and the massacre of the POW's. On the way home, we still faced dangers at sea - mines and typhoons. Here my faith was to prevail. Family reunions and rehabilitation was painful and hard. Finally, I answered the requests of the Canadian government seeking tradesmen. After complying with all the requirements of immigration, my family was accepted. I can only say I have given my best, but I deplore the actions of many Canadians who have become gullible to many devices.

Written and edited by a team of international experts and emerging talents from around the world, each chapter considers the nature and meaning of growth, contains a comprehensive review of empirical research or reflections from professional practice, and offers exciting, novel, and rigorous suggestions for future programs of research that aim to promote positive change in sport to support the safety, wellbeing, and welfare of the people who take part (e.g., athletes, coaches, paid employees, volunteers). From the dark ages, the treatment of those mentally ill has progressed from chaining to a wall those afflicted with mental disturbance who never saw the light of day. However, in US emergency rooms, our young people on the brink of despair are held hostage for psychiatric care. We have been bound to the antiquated biomedical model of mental health care. It is fortunate that we, as a society, are experiencing a mental health crisis of enormous proportions currently only in the sense that we are beginning to hear a wake-up call as we witness a total breakdown of our mental healthcare system regarding the mental stability of our youth and other groups of everyday people. Healthcare professionals and societies are beginning to understand that mental health is integral to overall health and is more than the absence of symptoms of psychological distress. The mastery important to us all includes the acquisition of the capacity to reflect, to relate on a deep level with others emotionally, and to empathize in the face of change or stressful situations. Resilient young people who possess these qualities and the ability to wrestle through adversity when they have the skillsets to do so, lead more successful lives when they know how to make lemonade out of lemons.

When night comes, look at the sky. If you see a falling star, dont wonder why, just make a wish. Trust me, it will come true, because I did and found Jesus Christ. Sometimes we think that things will never change in life. I dont know anyone who has not yet experienced pressure of one kind or another in life. It may raise its head swiftly and unexpectedly. Or we may see and feel it coming slowly but surely, like a slight crack in the wall of a building going up or down. You might arrive late for some event and miss something special. This is a minor pressure, and it usually does not last long; its an everyday occurrence that does not really matter very much. There are many such pressures. On the other hand, the pressure of realising that the dream you had has failed to come true may overcome you. You may feel depressed because of the loss of your spouse, the chaos in the workplace, the loss of friends, or the insincerity of those you considered friends, a lack of understanding on the part of your family, heartache that never seems to end, or feeling that God does not hear your prayer. There are more types of pressure than there is grass growing on the plains of the Highveld. Do not give up when you still have something to give. I know that through Christ I am strong enough to make all my dreams come true. I know love, therefore I give love. I recognise that my love has great value and must be reciprocated. If my unconditional love is taken for granted, it doesnt disappear. I am quite capable of articulating my needs. I know that with God the world is my playground, but without God I will just be played with. I understand that my life experiences are merely lessons meant to bring me closer to self-knowledge and unconditional self-love. I know that I will at times have to inspire others to reach the potential God gave them. I know my past, understand my present and face my future. I am not afraid of tomorrow for I have seen yesterday and I love today. Jim Rohn says that happiness is not something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the present.

Being a top swimmer in the open water is not easy. A marathon swim in a lake, river or sea takes many boring hours and requires a lot of mental strength. We swim in the professional circuit (WPMSA), but outside the official international swimming federation FINA. Familiarity and recognition is therefore very difficult. Why then continue for seven years in that circuit? And how exciting is it to swim across The English Channel! In my career I was six times World Champion, traveled all over the world to swim competitions. Every time with a coach at my side who is indispensable in top sport. Every marathon is an adventure. Sometimes with beautiful victories, sometimes with bitter abandonment. Sometimes in a wild sea, the other time in a calm, boring, long stretched lake. Then comes the moment of retiring. This period has a huge impact on my future life. Read it in 'Hardship of a marathon swimmer' Monique Blok-Wildschut (1963) is a six-time World Champion in marathon swimming. From a young age she trained hard and lived for swimming, adventure and traveling. In her career in the professional circuit she traveled across the world to gain points. The life of a marathon swimmer was heavy but also free and varied. This has shaped her mentally. In her current work she still seeks variety and wants to achieve the best for her clients. Freedom and passion are a common theme throughout her life. She helps people with a blockade to listen and communicate through the Tomatis Method. Her newest challenge is to help top athletes who are blocked mentally to break through and get to their top. With this she can unite her two worlds, the sport and therapy. This completes the circle. Swimming the English Channel: 'I can start at twelve o'clock. Pitch dark. A green luminous stick, as a search point, is attached to my swimsuit. The water temperature is a degree or sixy Fahrenheit. From Dover Beach I walk into the water and swim as quickly as possible to the spotlight of the fishing cutter. I have never swam in the dark before. It is actually quite scary, outside the spotlight I do not have any reference point. And then swim. The light seems to be in my eyes all the time. I see nothing. I am afraid I would die when I am outside of that beam and end up in the big black sea. At a certain moment I see that the moon is shining. It is full moon and it feels like I have company, a kind of buddy. I like it and say hello to the moon. The moon moves. In the beginning it is small, clear and behind me, after about five hours big yellow and in front of me. It gives me the idea that I swim from one point to another. A reference, how important is that I realize. The waves are still brutal, choppy. The pointy waves let me roll up and down quickly. I get sick of it. Do not complain, I say to myself, just swimming, we have not paid all that money for nothing and this is now my chance to put myself on the map. The seasickness may soon become less. It stayed that way. The skipper and my father have a solution. I have to swim on the other side of the boat. The waves are coming from my side. If I go swimming on the other side, the boat can break the worst buds. The problem is that I can only breathe on the left side....
