The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, it builds and makes use of long-run data from Sweden on formal education that have never been used to date. Second, it provides a quantitative application of recent theoretical work on the link between demographic changes and economic growth through their effect on education. It concludes that changes in longevity may account for as much as 20% of the observed rise in education over the period from 1800-2000 via a horizon effect, but have little impact on income growth over the period. On the contrary, changes in population density and composition are central, mainly thanks to their effect on productivity. Most income growth over this period would not have materialized if demographic variables had stayed constant since 1800.

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Pedagogy - School System, Educational and School Politics, grade: B, Uppsala University, course: Education and Reform Strategies in Sweden, language: English, abstract: Introduction Sweden is the third largest country in the European Union after France and Spain. It has approximately 9 million inhabitants thereof ca. 1 million immigrants . Till the end of August 2006 there had 64,681 Immigrants been given excess to Sweden. So the population is heterogeneous and is concentrated in mainly three areas of the country. “In an international comparison, the Swedish overall rate of participation in education is one of the highest.” The basic principle of education in Sweden is equality. This means equality of opportunities / access but also equality of outcomes / results. Everybody in Sweden must have access to an equivalent, uniform education, regardless of sex, irrespective of their social or ethnic backgrounds or their place of residence, because a well-educated society is a prerequisite for the expansion of the country’s economic and the further development of the Swedish welfare state. There is also a big awareness of the importance of research and development. Due to this the cost for the education system in Sweden are very high, among the highest in the world . In the following pages I want to outline the Swedish educational system. I will start with a sketch of the reforms and according to the lights of this essay I will begin with the 20th century. The goal is to shed light on the needs of the society and on political reasons of the reforms. Furthermore I will represent an overview of the today’s system and discuss the differences between the “old” and the “new” strategies as well as advantages and disadvantages. The History of Sweden’s Education – short Review In the 19th century Sweden rapidly transformed from an agricultural, traditional society into an industrialised society. During this industrialisation and also democratisation the well-known Swedish model developed (1920s). By this is the specific model of a social welfare system is meant. It was characterized by centralism, universalism and cooperation between the capital and labour (consensus). At that time the focus was on developing a (social) welfare system this includes also focus on the education system. In this inclusive and centralised welfare state, science was a tool for modernising society in large reforms. The peak was reached in the 1970s. During this decade the demands for decentralisation as well as pluralism increased. [...]

Excerpt from Education in Sweden Among common school subjects, gymnastics in Sweden according to Ling's system has for its chief aim the physical development Of the children. This is partly the case also with regard to the teaching Of gardening and tree-plant ing, Of sloyd for boys, and Of domestic economy. For the same purpose, various social-hygienic arrangements, aside from those provided for by the law, have been introduced in several school districts, more especially in the larger towns. Among these may be mentioned the distribution Of food to children, the arrangements for school baths, work-rooms, vacation colonies, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. During the 1870 to 1970 period, Sweden experimented with a number of social policy measures, including far-reaching egalitarian policies and an extensive welfare system, yet they still enjoyed one of the most rapid growth rates in the world economy. These policy experiments in large part marked the beginnings of the academic field of economic history, nurtured most carefully by Eli F. Heckscher. This collection of reprinted articles by various authors reflects upon Sweden's economic maturity from a poor preindustrial nation to a wealthy European model economy. The development of Sweden's banking system plays prominently in the discussion, as does the importance of exports and transportion lines to this geographically small country with a long coastline. But perhaps the most attention goes to how the Swedish economy thrived while steadfastly emphasizing their public welfare system. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Excerpt from Education in Sweden The nation which at the present day inhabits the Kingdom of Sweden is considered to have had its dwelling-place there for an unbroken period of at least six thousand years, - a longer period than any other European nation can look back upon, within its present boundaries, with the exception of the kindred race in Denmark. According to researches recently undertaken the Swedish people seems to be the purest remainder now extant of the old Teutonic race. The Swedes have three times, in a more direct way, played an important part in the history of the world. First, and in common with the other Scandinavian nations, as a »vagina gentium» (Jordanes), before the great Migration of Peoples, which fact is however veiled in obscurity; then, during the renowned Viking period, when Swedish chieftains founded the Russian Empire; and finally, during the reign of the great Gustavus Adolphus, when the Swedish people saved liberty of conscience and freedom of religion to humanity. During the two last centuries, in proportion to their numbers, the Swedes have taken an honourable part in the humanitarian, scientific and artistic work of the civilized nations. Particularly in the nineteenth century, and with a period of ninety years of peace, the country has advanced remarkably. As an eloquent expression of the present stage of the culture of the Swedish people, is generally quoted, that according to the vital statistics the mortality is in Sweden lower, and the expectation of life higher, than in any other European, and probably also any Extra-European country.
