“Nature’s Medicine: A collection of Medicinal Plants from Malaysia’s Rainforest” is an e-book compiling medicinal plants we call weeds. It features the health benefits of medicinal herbs and plants for public use. Most weeds are found in home gardens and are easily accessible. We call them weeds because we do not have to care of these plants. Weeds, in many cases can be used to fight the flu, cough, ease indigestion, threat poison ivy rashes, snake bites, joint pains and even make a tasty meal as a salad. You may be surprised to learn that identifying weeds in your own yard can be beneficial. This e-book is also intended to serve as a reference guide and create interest among students and scientists to study the wonder of the weeds in greater detail. The weeds are picturesquely presented to enable readers to recognise them at a glance. Their medicinal properties and traditional uses are also highlighted.

A total of 275 methanol extracts from edible Indonesian and Malaysian plants were screened for their in vitro anti-tumor-promoting activities by using the tumor promoter 12-O-hexadecanoylphorbol-concentration of 200 ug/mL, 70% of the total extracts inhibited EBV activation by 30% or more. The rate is comparable to and much higher than those observed in our previous tests of edible Thai (60%) and Japanese (26%) plants respectively. Zerumbone, a humulene-type sesquiterpene, was then isolated from the thizomes of Zingiber zerumbet as a potent inhibitor of EBV activation in Raji cells (IC50 = 0.14 uM). In addition, 19 species of plant food-items of wild primates in Pangandaran, Indonesia, were tested, and 6 species, Alsophi glauca, Cinnamomum sintoc, Saurauia cauliflora, Rubus alpestris, Toona sureni, and Litsea cubeba, were found to be highly active.

Natural Resources and Sustainability explores how human needs and desires, from sustenance and shelter to recreation and travel, have spurred the consumption of Earth's material resources. Scientists, ecologists, and other expert authors present the historical impact of commercial activities (in industries as varied as fisheries, agriculture, energy, and mineral extraction), discuss the global distribution and use of renewable and nonrenewable resources, and focus on innovative approaches for the future. Readers will learn why renewal doesn't necessarily put a resource beyond harm and why the no-free-lunch adage applies to all natural resources.
